A more transformative agenda and strong political will are needed to reinvent the way countries and multilateral institutions respond to the needs of the developing world and various crises.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley made the point on Tuesday as she expressed concern that there were still too few groupings and countries determining the fate of others when it came to various issues.

“The ultimate absurdity of what I am saying is amplified when we look at the arrangements that led to the P5 within the context of the (UN) Security Council. How do five countries have the right to veto that which others want to see happen?” said Mottley. The P5 comprises China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.          Continue reading →

Canada was just ranked the second-best country in the world – NBI Poll

Canada’s positive perception on the world stage is increasing according to a new poll that ranks the top “nation brands,” or the public image of a country.

The 2021 Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index (NBI) collected over 60,000 interviews online in 20 panel countries, ranking the top 60 countries by how they’re viewed abroad.

The NBI has been ranking countries’ reputations since 2005, and while Canada has always been a top-ten contender, we’ve been gaining ground in recent years.        Continue reading →

Can the Caribbean avoid being caught up in the accelerating east-west struggle for global influence? Is the region likely to find itself in a bidding war, ‘dancing to the rhythm of dollar diplomacy’, as Jamaica’s former prime minister, Bruce Golding, has suggested?

Reading the communiqué from the recently held G7 summit, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the consensus arrived at by wealthy western nations on relations with China and Russia, the promotion of shared values, and investment in post-pandemic economic recovery, will not be used to attempt to seduce the region.

Although the meeting held in England’s far Southwest touched on multiple issues, it is the future approach agreed towards China and its Belt and Road Initiative, and on corporate taxation which will likely become the most complex future issues that Caribbean governments must now respond to.            Continue reading →

 IN EUROPE, vaccination against covid-19 is off to a worryingly slow start. Just 11 doses for every 100 people have been administered in the European Union, against 32 in America and 38 in Britain. Europeans are cross with their governments and with the European Commission, which botched the ordering of vaccines for the EU last year. Worse, another wave of infections seems to be building in several countries.

But in recent days worries about speed have been joined by concerns about safety. On March 15th France, Germany and Italy became the latest in a growing list of European countries, now more than a dozen, to announce that they were temporarily halting the use of a covid-19 vaccine made by AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish pharmaceutical firm.    Continue reading →

There is little peace and good will in the political arena this season. And that applies not just to Guyana, but also to some of the leading democracies such as the UK, France and, of course, the US, to name a few. There is President Donald Trump whose administration stumbled into farce a long time ago, and which has since been disintegrating into chaos. As has become customary in more recent times, lawmakers agreed a short-term spending compromise to carry the government over into the new year.

However, Mr Trump has refused to sign the bill unless the Senate attaches funding to it for a border wall fence. So far he has adhered to that position, effectively partly shutting down the government, and sending thousands of its workers home without their end-of-year salaries. Apparently he does not remember that the Republicans paid a heavy price for refusing to sign a compromise when President Clinton was in office.              Continue reading →

It is the only real danger that threatens Israel, that threatens the world, that threatens me.

Those who treat it today with equanimity, with indifference, will come to regret it.

IN THE year I was born – 1923 – a ridiculous little demagogue with a funny moustache, Adolf Hitler, staged an attempted putsch in Munich. It was put down by a handful of policemen and soon forgotten.

The world had far more serious dangers to contend with. There was the galloping inflation in Germany. There was the young Soviet Union. There was the dangerous competition between the two mighty colonial powers, Great Britain and France. ONE HAS to choose: Binyamin Netanyahu is either incredibly shrewd or incredibly foolish.
Take his Iran policy. Actually, there is little to choose from. Netanyahu has no other policy to speak off.

According to him, Iran constitutes a mortal danger to Israel. If it obtains a nuclear weapon, God forbid, it will use it to annihilate Israel. It must be stopped by any means, preferably by American armed intervention.

This may be quite wrong (as I believe). But it makes sense.  So what did Netanyahu do?

FOR YEARS, he alarmed the world. Every day the cry went out: Save Israel! Prevent the destruction of the Jewish State! Prevent a Second Holocaust! Prevent Iran from producing The Bomb!   Continue reading →

French police use tear gas to disperse migrants

Riot police try to stop migrants as they renew attempts to cross into Britain via Calais Eurotunnel.

[03 Aug 2015 05:35 GMT | Al Jazeera ]  French riot police have used tear gas on migrants who attempted to cross the Eurotunnel from Calais into Britain.  More than 200 migrants tried to cross the undersea tunnel from Calais on Sunday.

The migrants broke down several levels of fencing by the tunnel’s entrance but French riot police responded by moving them away from a motorway and spraying them with tear gas.

Thousands of migrants have tried to make it into the tunnel in recent weeks with hopes of finding a way onto a train or lorry headed for Britain. At least 10 migrants have died attempting the dangerous journey since June.  Continue reading →

THERE IS an old Chinese curse that says: “May you live in historic times!” (If there isn’t, there should be.)

This week was a historic time. The Crimea seceded from Ukraine. Russia annexed it.

A dangerous situation. No one knows how it will develop.

AFTER MY last article about the Ukrainian crisis, I was flooded with passionate e-mail messages.

Some were outraged by one or two sentences that could be construed as justifying Russian actions. How could I excuse the former KGB apparatchik, the new Hitler, the leader who was building a new Soviet empire by destroying and subjugating neighbouring countries?  Continue reading →
