Virtual Schools are booming – Who’s paying attention?

Millions of kids, some as young as 5, now get their schooling online. Just one problem: Nobody knows how well it works.

My nephew’s senior year in high school is already different from mine in any number of ways—the iPhones, the Facebook account, an online encyclopedia of college essay ideas. But perhaps most astonishing is what I realized only after I talked to him about his daily routine: just how little time he’s physically in a school.

This semester, he’s taking two of his classes virtually, and even for the rest, so much of his coursework is done on the Web that he rarely needs to go into the building. By the time he graduates next year, he’ll have logged nearly a full semester’s worth of credits from completely virtual classes.  Continue reading

Nov. 6 — NEW JERSEY — E-mail voting extended to 8 p.m. Friday. Faced with a flood of applications to vote via e-mail or fax by people displaced by Hurricane Sandy, the Garden State extended the voting deadline. Over the weekend, the administration of Gov. Chris Christie chose to offer e-mail and fax voting to storm victims, despite security concerns. See the full story.

Nov. 6 — FLORIDA — Voting machine problems; 12,310 ‘wrong-day’ robocalls. At least two Hillsborough County polls reported vote-machine problems, The Tampa Tribune reported. Also, officials acknowledged the higher number of Pinellas County voters who got a robo-call Tuesday by election officials mistakenly telling them the vote was Wednesday. Another 28,300 calls with the correct date were made Monday. The mistake came from a vendor, said the county elections supervisor. Vote-scanning problems also occurred in the South Florida communities of Miami Springs, Pembroke Pines and Plantation, the Miami Herald reported.   [more]

Gayle wants Windies to win for Caribbean-American fans

(WICB) Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Chris Gayle flashed his characteristic smile this morning as he embraced several West Indies fans at the Central Broward Regional Park. Gayle and the West Indies team had just arrived for training and as they got off the bus fans were on hand to “show some love” to the home players.

The strongly-built six-footer admitted that the atmosphere in south Florida reminded him of the pre-match hype back in the Caribbean. During his time in the batting cage, Gayle deposited a few balls into the stands and onto the grass mound to give supporters a taste of what they can expect this weekend. Florida to host two Twenty/20 matches WI v New Zealand

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket fans in the United States will have a double treat this summer as the West Indies face New Zealand in two historic Twenty20 matches in Florida. The West Indies Cricket Board on Tuesday confirmed that the second half of the Digicel Series 2012 will commence in the North American country when the West Indies plays there for the first time.

The double header will be played on June 30 and July 1 at the 15,000 capacity Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

The two teams will also play five ODIs and two Tests. The Digicel ODI Series will commence in Jamaica with two matches at Sabina Park and conclude in St Kitts at Warner Park which will host a triple header.   Continue reading
