PPP says international community sold elections for oil

Expressing his non-acceptance of the 2015 results, Ramsammy on his Facebook page claimed that the “ Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and the International Observers seemed more concerned about expediency of an early release of results than ensuring the integrity of the elections and securing the democratic rights of citizens.” Continue reading

Just days after authorities announced that Exxon-Mobil, an American oil giant has found hydrocarbons offshore Guyana but was yet to determine if it was in commercial quantities, the leader of the opposition coalition, David Granger announced that if he wins next Monday’s General Elections government would stash away some of the earnings from the natural resources sector for future generations.

“I am talking about putting the profits coming out of gold and diamonds, coming out of timber and coming out of petroleum and any other mineral discovered in this country but the profits will go into a Sovereign Wealth Fund to benefit future generations,” Granger told a mammoth gathering at a rally held  at the Square of the Revolution by A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+ AFC)Continue reading

Venezuela’s relations with Guyana – commentary

Venezuela’s relations with Guyana

Guyana -Venezuela - Disputed territoryMARCH 8, 2015 · BY Stabroek News – Editorial

The week before last Takuba Lodge issued a press release stating that Foreign Minister Delcy Rodríguez of Venezuela had raised an objection with the Country Manager of Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd about the dispatch of an oil rig from Louisiana to an exploratory concession granted by the Government of Guyana.

The site identified for the drilling is called Liza, which is located off the coast of Demerara within the Stabroek Block. Needless to say, it is situated well within Guyana’s waters, and while Venezuela’s spurious claim to this country’s land space has never encompassed territory east of the Essequibo River, the Stabroek Block does extend into offshore Essequibo. The implications of this, one supposes, is the primary reason for Venezuela’s objection.

The latest protest from our western neighbour follows an ingrained pattern whereby it has attempted to thwart any major development on land or sea in Essequibo over the past few decades, be it a hydroelectric project, a spaceport, or an exploratory concession for oil.   Continue reading

WikiLeaks Guyana – 20% of fuel smuggled from Venezuela – Border Dispute still alive

SEPTEMBER 14, 2011 | BY KNEWS |

A US Embassy confidential report back in 2006 said that the long-simmering Guyana-Venezuela border dispute has slowed the pace of bilateral growth between the two countries.

According to the cable sent by the US Embassy in Georgetown, from then Ambassador Roland Bullen, despite President Hugo Chavez’s high-profile visit to Guyana in February 2004, relations between Guyana and Venezuela remain cordial but not close.

The border issue was also seen by the Americans as continuing to undermine Guyana’s development of its resource-rich Essequibo region, to the detriment of Guyanese and U.S. economic interests.   Continue reading
