Given the Caribbean passion for cricket and its penchant for revelry, there is no more appropriate location for a T20 tournament than the region.

It was a combination that influenced Digicel, the Irish mobile-phone company long established in the region and in its cricket, to sign a 50-year agreement with the West Indies Cricket Board, originally through Barbados-based merchant bank Verus International, for the ownership of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).    Continue reading

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday November 7, 2014 (AMG) — Columbus International Inc., the fibre-based telecoms company which operates in the Caribbean as Flow, has been acquired by LIME parent company, Cable & Wireless Communications Plc. (CWC), in a US$3bn buyout deal announced today.

CWC will pay US$1.9bn for the privately-held, Barbados-based business, and will also assume Columbus’ net debt, which stood at US$1.17bn as at June 30, 2014. Continue reading

Following Saturday’s Mashramani float parade which saw a total of 30 bands competing under the theme “Reflecting Creativity, Embracing Diversity’s, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport announced the results this evening.

The parade was a huge success as bands competed in the following category; costume and band parade-individual (king and queen, male and female), full and semi costume (large, medium and small), floats (commercial and non-commercial) and regional (full costume and individual) with depictions keeping in line with the theme.         Continue reading

Very soon the children housed at the Mahaica Children’s home will have new living quarters and improved facilities around them and its all thanks to DIGICEL. The Telephone Company is collaborating with the Ministry of Labour Human Services and Social Security on the project; which according to Minister Jennifer Webster, will improve the lives of some 60 Orphans and abused children.    Continue reading

  • float parade returns to Berbice after two decades

It took three giants –two into brewing and the other into mobile communications – to infuse much-needed energy to transform the Mashramani parade into a gyrating sea of red, blue, gold and white yesterday.
Thousands braved the threat of rain to line the main parade route and watch the annual costume and float parade that marks the climax of celebrations for the country’s Republic anniversary.

Brewery giants Banks DIH and Ansa McAl under their Banks Beer and Carib Beer brands infused the usual bacchanal that was associated with Mashramani, providing much needed entertainment for those who stood hours upon hours waiting.  Of course, there were those who chose the smarter route of picnicking on the sides of the road.
