A ‘nutty’ digression from negativity this week. Do you ever get tired of hearing about Guyana’s fabulous natural resource potential, especially when set against our plodding economy? Large mineral deposits and huge timber swathes dominate in our hinterland/rain forests. Along our coastland, Sugarcane and Rice reign.

But here comes Coconut, the lowly palm, whispering through its wind-swept fronds, “Time for me to assert myself. I am Mister Coconut! Give me a chance to show what I’ve been doing for you, and how much more I can do – let’s start with my Sweeeeet Water. Continue reading

50 of the Best Uses for Coconut Oil

50 of the Best Uses for Coconut Oil

coconut_oil_imageCoconut oil has a bit of a craze surrounding it lately.

People have put together hundreds of different uses for this beneficial oil and it’s found its way into pantries, medicine cupboards, and even first aid kits. Some of the uses may seem bizarre at first, but coconut oil has garnered this newfound fame for good reason. It works.

For years, coconut oil has had a bad name, lumped in with unhealthy saturated fats. People steered away from it and other high fat foods. The problem with throwing coconut oil in the same category as butter, margarine, and shortening is this oil is far healthier than it appears. The saturated fats in coconut oil come from medium chain triglycerides. These shorter fat chains are easily put to use by the body and are not simply stored away as fat.  Continue reading

Traditional Home Remedies Of Guyana – By Dmitri Allicock

Traditional Home Remedies Of Guyana

By Dmitri Allicock

A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his thought to derive benefit from his illnesses”

 [Hippocrates -father of Western Medicine]

If you grew up in Guyana you would certainly be acquainted with some of these common over the –counter- medicines and remedies that brought relief for various afflictions and ailments. Corner stores carried a wide array of medicines found only in the Caribbean and Guyana. These were augmented with herbal medicines and treatments before a visit to the doctor was attempted.

Home remedies have been around for thousands of years. Even these days about 30 per cent of prescription drugs are still synthesised from plants. In fact, the word ‘drug’ comes from an old Dutch word, drogge, which means ‘to dry’ – which is how many plant medications were prepared. However, it is always wise to remember, just because something is “naturally” growing from a tree, doesn’t mean it’s safe to consume.    Continue reading

The Health Benefits of Coconuts

The Health Benefits of Coconuts

By Dr. Mercola

I have long been a fan of coconut oil as one of the most health promoting of all plant-based fats.  I have spent nearly 15 winters in Hawaii where fresh coconuts off the tree are readily available.  Coconut oil comes from the “meat” of the coconut.

But today, I’d like to share a little information about coconut oil’s best friend: coconut water.

If you’ve ever picked up a fresh coconut in the grocery store and shaken it, you’ve heard the liquid sloshing inside—this is coconut water.  Both coconut water and coconut milk come from coconuts, but they are not the same thing.

Coconut Milk Versus Coconut Water

Coconut milk, known in Malaysia and Indonesia as “santan” and as “gata” in the Philippines, is a thick liquid made by grinding up coconut meat and then diluting it with plain water. Coconut milk is a rich source of healthy fat, protein, and energy and is often used in cooking, especially in Asian cuisine. Coconut Oil Touted as Alzheimer’s Remedy

Coconut Oil Touted as Alzheimer’s Remedy

Researchers say the ketones found in coconut oil have slowed the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in some people and may actually prevent it.

As you may know coconut oil has been shunned over the years as cooking oil manufacturers like those making canola oil have highlighted the fact that it may be harmful in the fight against cholesterol.  However it has been found recently that coconut oil aids the manufacture of HDL – the “good cholesterol”.  This fact has not been advertised.  This video says that ketones found in coconut oil can slow or prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.  It is worth a look.
