Ramson most likely interrupted a “carefully orchestrated selection process” for PPP presidential candidate – Ramkarran

Ralph Ramkarran

Ramkarran, a former long-standing member of the PPP, made his view known in his most recent column.

There, he acknowledged that Ramson recently announced publicly that he would seek the PPP’s nomination to be its presidential candidate for the 2020 general elections. But, Jagdeo chided Ramson and said that he deviated from party principles.            Continue reading

Guyanese women should fight their own battle

Guyanese women should fight their own battle

January 27, 2017 – Stabroek News – Letters – By Yvonne Sam

Dear Editor,

Yvonne Sam

Permit me to respond to the letter in Stabroek News of January 26, by Clement Rohee, captioned ‘Where were the women of Guyana on Saturday?’ (see letter below).  Yes, where were they?  It is apropos to quote a Guyanese saying: ‘It na good foh pick up other people fire rage.’ Do the women in Guyana need overseas impetus to jolt their awareness of what is taking place right in their own part of the world?

If as stated by the writer, almost every issue raised (with very few exceptions) affects women in every Caricom country including Guyana, then what have they all done thus far? Do they lack the skills to mobilize and spread awareness, or have they become complacent with their lot? Are there no local clarions to be sounded? No leaders to spur them into action?      Continue reading

Guyana, US ready to overhaul Extradition Treaty

ExtraditionThursday, 04 June 2015 –  Demerara Waves – by Denis Chabrol and Zena Henry

Guyana is eager to replace an 84-year old Extradition Treaty with the United States (US) and slash the powers of the national security minister in determining whether Guyanese should be sent to that North American country to face trial for a range of crimes.

“We should have a brand new one now with the Americans,” Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan told Demerara Waves Online News in an exclusive interview on Thursday, June 4. “Indeed we would have to do some amendment to both the Fugitive Offenders Amendment Act and also to have a treaty with America,” he added.  Continue reading

Newly appointed Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan plans to launch a wide-ranging probe into the alleged sale of Guyanese visas and citizenship to mainly Chinese, Indians and Brazilians.

Describing the alleged racket as “huge,” he said a named official collected millions of dollars from staff from two major Asian companies to grant citizenship.

“I will call for all the files. I want as many files as possible in relation to this citizenship thing because it is going to be investigated thoroughly as to who granted what and on the basis of what,” said Ramjattan.   Continue reading

In an article for my blog, www.conversationtree.gy, published in SN last Sunday, I took issue with a statement by former President Jagdeo that implied that Cheddi and Janet Jagan lived in luxury. His argument that the Jagans lived such a lifestyle, comparable to his own at the time his house was built, was an attempt to justify his own Cadillac lifestyle, which over the past few years has come under severe scrutiny and criticism.

There were outraged responses by many people to Jagdeo’s statement, including from Clem Seecharran and, more indirectly, Peter Fraser, two distinguished Guyanese historians living and working in the UK. But the most telling came from Nadira Jagan-Brancier, the Jagan daughter, Dr. Tulsie Dyal Singh and Sadie Amin. Dr. Singh, who conferred with Dr Jagan about his medical condition just before he died and visited his home, said that his own family home in Palmyra on the Corentyne when he was growing up in the 1950s was of similar size to the Jagan home. Sadie Amin gave a description of the modest lifestyle and home of the Jagans, including its leaking roof.   Continue reading

The shooting is believed to have occurred sometime between 19:40 to 20:00 hrs.

Ambassador Harper- a competent woman of integrity but not a vote-getter— analysts

Education Minister, Priya Manickchand and PPPC Prime Ministerial candidate, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper.

Just hours after the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) began playing up the significance of a competent, honest woman as its Prime Ministerial candidate, two political analysts do not believe Ambassador Elisabeth Harper will bring much votes to the incumbent party against a combined opposition in the May 11, 2015 general and regional elections.

“I don’t think she will contribute any votes to the PPP. I think she brings value in terms of atmosphere and aesthetics. I mean she is a nice lady, she has been competent in what she is doing,” said former PPPC government minister, Dr. Henry Jeffrey.   Continue reading
