On March 27, Nations around the world, observed “World Theatre Day.” This annual event was established in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and supported by UNESCO. In this article, I am pleased to throw the spotlight on veteran Guyanese dramatist Ken Corsbie, who has been in the theatre arts for over seven decades.

Now in his early 90s, Ken Corsbie has been a member of the Theatre Guild of Guyana from its inception. However, his initial activities with theatre arts actually began at the Taitt’s Yard, now known as Cara Lodge on Quamina Street, previously Murray Street.        Continue reading

Since living in Guyana again I have seen first-hand the need for us to hold up our own achievers, to shout about them, not only for the praise that is due but, more pivotally, for the powerful information about our worth that is passed on to the new Guyanese wending their way, here and abroad. While that is clearly a national mission, we should all do our part in promoting the image and today I come in that vein to hold up the name of Ken Corsbie who was honoured two weeks ago in Barbados as the 2016 recipient of the Earl Warner Trust Lifetime Achievement Award. OUTSTANDING CARIBBEAN THEATRE practitioners Clairmonte Taitt and Kendel Hippolyte are the new Earl Warner Trust’s Lifetime Achievement Awards recipients.

Taitt, 81, born in Guyana to a Barbadian father and Guyanese mother, and St Lucian Hippolyte, 61, were hailed by members of the Trust and a small audience at the Walcott Warner Theatre of the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination on Saturday night as versatile artistes from whom ensuing generations had much to learn.  Continue reading
