Jagdeo says Irfaan Ali is constitutionally “deemed” President; no reference to Chief Elections Officer

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday said Guyana’s constitution clearly provides for the People’s Progressive Party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Irfaan Ali to be declared President.

“It has already been established now that the PPP’s list has the most votes and, therefore, Irfaan Ali is already deemed the President of Guyana. It’s awaiting that section of the Constitution  which says that the Chair of GECOM shall now declare him so as far as we are concerned all of the shenanigans  to prevent the declaration, it will not work because that is the Supreme Law of the country,” Jagdeo said.          Continue reading

Guyana Elections 2020: High Court says it can hear case against GECOM…..

Chief Justice, Roxane George-Wiltshire on Sunday ruled that the High Court has jurisdiction to hear related cases involving several now “absolute” orders against the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that results for Region Four must not be declared unless they are verified using the same process as they other nine regions have.

Sunday’s decision effectively puts a brake on the possible meeting of GECOM to ratify  a report by the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield and pave the way for the possible swearing in of David Granger as President for a second consecutive term.              Continue reading

Guyana Elections: GECOM on Track for Country’s March 2, 2020 Polls

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday December 20, 2019 – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says it is well on track for the hosting of general and regional elections next March.

Preparatory works for the upcoming poll have included continuous engagements with stakeholders and the utilisation of technical advisors.

Chair of the elections body, retired Justice Claudette Singh, has assured that everything is on schedule.

The Final Results of the 2015 General Elections were declared by the Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield today. The APNU+AFC have 33 seats and the PPPC has 32 seats in the National Assembly.

Gecom imageThe People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) intends to ask for a partial recount of ballots in all 10 regions, according to Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally.

Surujbally,however, said results to be disseminated by 6PM Wednesday could show a trend towards who would have won the May 11, 2015 general elections. “”You will define it as a trend. I will give it to you as raw data,” he said.

“We will decide by 5pm how we will proceed with the declaration of results in their entirety,” he told a news briefing. He, however, reiterated that the final official results that include the declaration of a winner would be made by the Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield only after he receives such an instruction from the seven-member Commission.   Continue reading
