More than a week ago, two Bourda vendors died after a crash involving a minibus that turned turtle, on the East Coast of Demerara. There was anger and then it was quickly forgotten.
On Vlissengen Road, a minibus slammed into a car and ended up in a nearby trench. A pregnant woman was among the persons rescued.

On Regent and Albert, an ambulance heading along Albert Street crashed into a minibus on Regent Street. A security camera video showed the horror.

I should say that nothing can surprise me anymore. The media business is designed to do exactly that, but you learn after a while to deal with it. Yet it appears more and more that quite a few headlines have served up a curve ball that would stagger you.

Before this past week, I knew nothing of Pandit Ubraj Narine. Kaieteur News reported then that he was a front-runner to be elected mayor. I thought that would have been a tough sell.

We are talking here about Georgetown, the capital city, a stronghold of the People’s National Congress Reform. Yet on Friday, Pandit Narine was sworn in.                  Continue reading

The last week was a holiday, one with Guyanese taking their foot off the pedal for a breather. We are a hardworking people who are slowly learning the value of pampering ourselves. That sometimes for some people can be both intoxicating and a bad habit.

If you are familiar with what transpires in the US – North America in general – and Europe, holidays are a big thing. People love travelling for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The associated shopping and other associated activities have been money-spinners.    Continue reading

A dear friend of mine and her family are here on vacation. She has lived in New York for the past two decades, has her own small business, and a daughter in college. She is seriously thinking of coming back here.

For many Guyanese living in Queens especially, life is tough in the private sector. Several small businesses along Liberty Avenue have been forced to close because of a drop in sales and the fact that more efficient and less costly services are being offered by the deep-pocket competitors.

It would mirror what is happening in the region and in Guyana, and drives home the reality that we are not alone in the world.     Continue reading
