Eusi Kwayana now 95. The Sage of Buxton, Guyana.

There is the village of Buxton on the East Coast Demerara, Region 4, Guyana.  There is the city of Buxton which is located in Derbyshire in the East Midlands region of England. I know both Buxtons having been to both – one on many occasions, the other just once.

That English Buxton at 960 feet elevation, is the highest above sea level of any town in England. Its population is 23,000.

Though not as large, or as populated as its English counterpart, the Guyana Buxton is one of the lowest villages in Guyana being almost about seven feet below sea level at high tide. At this time (2020) its population is approaching 6,000.        Continue reading

In keeping with our tradition and culture, Buxton-Friendship Heritage Fund will hold its annual popular extravaganza on Saturday, June 29, 2019, in Brooklyn, New York. The event has been moved to the more spacious and comfortable setting at St. Gabriel’s Hall, and will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The FANOKO SINGERS, a dynamic band of artistes who hail from Belladrum, West Coast Berbice, rendering a style of performance similar to the Yoruba Singers, will head the list of entertainers. They will be joined by legendary saxophonist “SAXIE” and fabulous D.J. STEREO CHOICE (Oneko Connell).            Continue reading

Our July 2018 newsletter is finally here. I was away on special assignment and vacation, so we’re pretty late in getting this issue to you. Nonetheless, as the saying goes: “Better late than never.”

Our 2nd Annual Patronal Dance in New York will be held this Labor-Day Weekend, in Brooklyn. That’s less than two weeks away. We hope those of you in the area will come out to enjoy this unique and legendary Buxton classic. Advance tickets are just $25 each, and could be obtained from any member of Buxton-Friendship Heritage Fund. Proceeds will go to fund Buxton Scholarship initiatives. More details on page 7.

Buxton-Friendship Heritage Fund and its partners are inviting students who have completed the CXC examination to apply for available scholarships and/or bursaries. Please send an e-mail to BuxtonExpress@aol.com indicating your interest.

Buxton-Friendship Express - August 2015The results of this year’s Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examinations came out this month. We feature the performances of a number of students. These students have done exceedingly well, and we salute them.

We have established a special fund to receive contributions to help the successful CXC students further their education. We are asking villagers and friends for their generous support to provide them with subsidies for university tuition, SAT programme, CAPE study materials and transportation costs. Please make cheques payable to: Buxton-Friendship Heritage Fund, Inc., and mail to 454 Vermont Street, Brooklyn, NY. Donations are federally tax-deductible in the United States.    Continue reading

As we celebrate the 177th Emancipation Anniversary, we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices of our ancestors. There are a number of activities planned to commemorate this important occasion in the village, and we encourage villagers and friends to participate. Details of events organized by the Buxton First of August Movement can be found on page 2 of this month’s Buxton-Friendship Express newsletter.

Our 5th annual Heritage Week programme for students will be held during the week that begins on August 9th. A list of students entering secondary school this year is recorded on page 10. These students, and anyone else who may be eligible, are asked to register promptly for the Empowerment Workshop, Edutainment Day Trip and other activities, as well as to receive their backpacks and school supplies.   Continue reading
