Commentary: Looking at the COVID-19 Down Under – by Francis Quamina Farrier

During the past four months I have written feature articles about the COVID19 pandemic focusing on a number of countries. They include Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe. During the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic globally, I consider it important for Guyanese to know a bit about how other countries around the world are dealing with the pandemic.

That is so especially with our neighbour Brazil, which has an extremely high number of cases – 5 million infected and 147,000 dead. That is second only to the United States with 7.6 million infected, including the president, and 214,000 deaths. Closer home, reports are that there are some infected persons in Brazil who are crossing the Takatu border river from Bon Fim into Lethem and spreading the virus in Region 9.          Continue reading →

Cricket: A new Imperium – Sweeping changes for the game

Stabroek News – 27 January 2014 – Tomorrow, the Board of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will begin deliberations on a proposal by its Finance & Commercial Affairs (FCA) committee for sweeping and astonishing changes in the way the game is run and how tours are scheduled. At the core of the proposal is that India, Australia and England would take charge of the game and that they would be immune to relegation in the two-tiered system that is also being promulgated.

It is in essence the cricketing version of the permanent five of the United Nations Security Council, as regressive and in need of urgent reform as that model is. And just as the permanent five were installed as the victors at the end of the Second World War, it is proposed that these three be ordained on the basis of the money they bring to the game and the level of the public interest in their teams.   Continue reading →

“Happiness”, or at least the discussion of it, is suddenly all around us. At the global, macro level, many countries – led by the pioneering efforts of the tiny mountain kingdom of Bhutan – are now seeking to measure the “happiness’ of their people rather than their per capita Gross National Income as a measure of how well they are doing.

At the individual level, there are happiness gurus from Oprah to Deepak Chopra that will convince you that it is within your reach to achieve a state of complete happiness if you would just follow their instructions.
What is going on, and are we Guyanese missing out something? There was a time – for most of mankind’s history, as a matter of fact – when the goal of man’s existence was simply to live a virtuous life. Continue reading →
