John Russell Rickford, the youngest of ten children, grew up in Cowan Street, Kingston and went on to become Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Stanford University. In conversation with Alim Hosein, Professor Rickford will discuss some of the themes and insights raised in his recent book, “Speaking My Soul: Race, Life and Language”. Alim Hosein is a Senior Lecturer of Linguistics at the University of Guyana.

The event will begin with readings of a selection of Creole prose and poetry including some of Wordsworth McAndrew’s Stages of Love, a 1916 Compendium by Graham Cruikshank citing words such as ‘jumbie’, ‘anansi’ and ‘putta-putta’ and a contemporary poem by Gabrielle Mohamed.

Moray House Trust has worked for a decade to promote culture and public discourse in Guyana. It was founded on the belief that a culture thrives and develops where ideas circulate and are robustly debated and interrogated.

If you would like to take part in the discussion, please join via Zoom.

Regards,

Moray House Trust
