GUYANA-SURINAME: US$2M contract signed for design of Corentyne River Bridge

A US$2 million contract was inked on Wednesday in Suriname for the feasibility study and design of the Corentyne River Bridge.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and his Surinamese counterpart Riad Nurmohamed signed the contract with WSP Caribbean Limited.

The contract will last for seven months and the project is expected to be awarded by early 2023.           

The expression of interest for the project was also launched on Wednesday during a live broadcast on Suriname’s Communication Service Facebook page.

Minister Edghill led a delegation to the neighbouring country for the signing of the contract.

During remarks, Edghill said the bridge is more than an infrastructural project but a vision for further development of the two countries.

“Development practitioners have agreed that bridges are key drivers of economic activity ensuring the increased efficiency of trade, rapid exchange of ideas and quick access to services for those you need them most,” Edghill said.

He said Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali and Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad Santokhi have made the completion of the bridge a top priority for their first term in office.

After the contract is awarded for the construction of the bridge, it is expected to be completed within three years while the durability of the bridge should be 100 years.

Both governments have jointly agreed to construct the bridge using the Public-Private Partnership method of procurement with a DBFOM (Design – Build – Finance – Operate – Maintain) model contract.

Once completed, the bridge will transform travel between Guyana and Suriname, forge stronger cultural bonds and knowledge sharing activities as well as improve economic activities.

“It will be a lasting symbol of the friendship, innovation and determination of two neighbours,” Edghill stated.

He revealed that the bridge will be designed to pass through Long Island, located along the Corentyne River. Edghill explained that the island has enormous potential to be developed as a commercial and tourist hub with the establishment of hotels, resorts and other forms of entertainment.

This, he posited, will attract tourists to both Guyana and Suriname.

“Landing in Guyana or Suriname should offer tourists the opportunity to seamlessly cross our borders. to cross and take advantage of the warm climate, pristine rainforests, beautiful rivers and hospitable people,” Edghill said.

    A great idea which time has come. Just be aware of crooked contractors with over-priced contracts and sub-standard materials. Remember who built the rail bridges over the Mahaica and Mahaicony rivers, and do the business with the Europeans whose construction projects have stood the passing of time.

    I dare to ask whether there is really a pressing need for a bridge over the Corentyne river costing well over 100 million USD, when there is hardly any transnational traffic between Guyana and Suriname? Here is the evidence for my claim: A few weeks go the only ferry carrying trucks and cars across the Corentyne was out of service for a few days due to urgently needed repairs. Did we see huge traffic backups at the Guyanese and Surinamese ferry terminals? Not to my knowledge!

    How is the Ali administration planing to pay for the bridge? If there is indeed hardly any transnational traffic, toll collection will never cover the construction costs. Wouldn’t improvements to the ferry service between Guyana and Suriname do the job of fostering more trade between the two nations? Why not purchase two larger state-of-the ferries that can carry more trucks and cars? In addition, one could upgrade the ferry terminals to accommodate more car and trucks. Once transnational traffic increases significantly over the current status, one should consider building a bridge. The saved millions could be used to upgrade the coast highway to a four-lane freeway between Corriverton and Georgetown.There is hardly any transnational traffic between Guyana and

      The Brazilian President completely botched his response to the coronavirus whilst openly aligning himself with the American madman Trump.

      Bolsonaro has also almost completely gutted the Amazon rainforest by indiscriminate slash-and-burn campaigns, thereby eviscerating hundreds of thousands of pristine, priceless wildlife habitats in its wake.

      The Ali-Jagdeo alliance in Guyana has also done irreparable harm to our hardwood forest. It’s like asking the mongoose to guard the chicken coop.

    Once politicians/wealthy people grasp the truth of human existence.. they don’t really care for down the road, then they become dangerous.There was a time when they cared, today false promises, ensuring everything is left to their off springs,taking, collecting,stealing, just me, I think the weather change is tailor made for theft, their promise “The world will be a better place…in fifty years” but buying beach houses, flying private jets, large yachts???.I don’t trust them anymore.
