Seminal work by scholar and future politician Eric Williams, rejected 80 years ago, to be republished in Britain

But when Eric Williams – who would later become the first prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago – sought to publish his “mind-blowing” thesis on capitalism and slavery in Britain, he was shunned by publishers and accused of undermining the humanitarian motivation for Britain’s Slavery Abolition Act. It was not until 1964 that the work found a publisher in the UK, but it has been out of print here for decades.

As we mourn the loss of Colin Moore, bringing a message of condolence and comfort to his family, I would like to share a few thoughts about my friend, colleague and mentor. He has been a champion for human rights, a voice of the downtrodden and devoted son of the soil.

What he has done as a political activist, legal scholar, historian, community organizer, father, husband and citizen of the world has left an indelible mark which will continue to influence many lives. His political advocacy spanned the globe, but particularly Guyana, Jamaica and the US. He participated in early efforts to establish a National Arts Council Center in Guyana to promote cultural and ethnic unity, and national solidarity.        Continue reading

GUYANA: Government to make first drawdown from oil fund for 2022 budget

Guyana’s Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said last Friday that the government intends to use some of the proceeds from its US$607 million Natural Resource Fund to finance the government’s budget for the fiscal year 2022.

Guyana has been borrowing to finance its budget for years but plans to lower its fiscal deficit this year.

“The fiscal deficit this year, in this budget, would be lower than the fiscal deficit in last year because from a financing perspective, that means we’d have to borrow less because some of the oil and gas revenue will go to replace the high level of borrowing that we have had.”          Continue reading
