I wish to say a special thank-you to Cy for sending me the link for live radio commentaries of West Indies cricket.

    West Indies vs. South Africa:

It is a thrill to hear the calm, descriptive voice of Reds, still going strong at 82. Sadly, West Indies Test cricket has fallen on hard times. The team is a far cry from the dominant force it was in past decades. But they are still competitive in the shortest format – T20.

Yesterday, I managed to catch the first of five T20 matches live out of beautiful Grenada. The game was briefly interrupted by passing showers a couple of times. In the end, though, WI breezed through to victory with five overs to spare. Chris Gayle, now in his twilight years, showed sparks of his brilliance with the bat.

In a couple of hours from now, the second match will begin at the same venue.

In the second T20 match today at the National Stadium in Grenada, the West Indies were given a relatively easy target of 167 but fell 16 runs short. At one point it appeared that they might just pull it off after Fabian Allen smacked five sixes in his 12-ball innings of 34.

Hopefully, they will make amends in the remaining three matches, as they tune up for the WC in the UAE in a few months’ time.

The top-order failed to show restraints as they fell to poor shot selections, a common malady in the squad. They had everything going their way: sunshine, a placid wicket, and a gettable target. The only missing ingredient was application.

They must do better, as they are a gifted bunch!
