May 16, 2021 – Kaieteur News – The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), Dr. Keith Rowley, yesterday announced a State of Emergency to combat the fight against COVID-19. The Prime Minister made the announcement at a press conference at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann.

Dr. Rowley said, “It was to ensure people have fewer opportunities to congregate and spread COVID-19, if you don’t have to be out for exempted reasons, you stay home under the force of law.”

He added that people who are sick with the virus are not able to access health care and are dying for oxygen.

Dr. Rowley said, “If you don’t have to be out for exempted reasons, you are to stay home under the force of law. I’m sorry but it has come to coffins and faces of dead people for us to realise that we are in and always has been in a very difficult place.”

He further disclosed at the press conference that the country is now dealing with twenty-one deaths in one day, meaning almost one person dying every hour, which is a very frightening situation for T&T.

“The more we are allowing ourselves to be infected, that population of infected people will generate a larger population of sick people and will generate a larger population of dead people,” Dr. Rowley added.

Meanwhile, the Principal Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards, gave an update on the number of beds in the parallel health care system.

“At this rate, we are out of hospital beds and if you require care, you will not be receiving the best level of care,” she said.
