Antony Blinken is a veteran diplomat who’s on home turf in the department

This is the third time I’ve witnessed a new secretary of state enter the building.

For Donald Trump’s envoys – Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo – the lobby was packed, infused with a mixture of apprehension and hope.

For Antony Blinken, the lobby was nearly empty because of Covid protocols – but the absent presence of the diplomatic corps was infused with a sense of relief.

What a relief! Finally reason and common sense enters the US State Department. Blinken is smart and understands that the US is only strong, if it acts with its allies in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania to defend liberal democracy. This alliance will be strong enough to contain China and Russia. Unlike US, these “superpowers” do not have formal allies and they lack any soft power. For all that call that dismiss the West as corrupt and fading, ask yourself the following question. If you had a choice between the US (or another liberal democracy), Russia or China where to live, what would you choose? I believe for most people (even in China and Russia nota bene), the choice is very clear.
