Guyana SPEAKS: Ansel Wong in Conversation with Roy Sawh – Sunday 10th January 2021 at 9am GMT

Dear Friends and Family,
Firstly, may I wish you all a very Happy New Year; one that is at the very least better than 2020!
Guyana SPEAKS will be holding a special one-off zoom event: Ansel Wong in Conversation with Roy Sawh on Sunday, 10th January 2021 at 9am GMT.
We appreciate 9am GMT is very early for a Sunday but unavoidable due to time zone differences between the UK and Australia where Roy Sawh currently resides.  Assuming you are able to join us, please register via eventbrite.  This will trigger the release of the zoom details one day prior to the event.
We will return to our usual programme of events (last Sunday of the Month at 2pm) on Sunday, 31st January 2021 and will circulate the details nearer the time.
Brief Background on activist, orator and pioneer, Roy Sawh
Screen Shot 2021-01-03 at 16.02.49.pngRoy spent 30 years of his life in the UK fighting injustice and racism.  He used the opportunity presented by Speakers’ Corner to speak out on issues of immigration, racism and the history of the empire.  In 1968, he was sentenced to twelve months in prison after police and magistrates interpreted his jocular speeches as “inciting violence” under the 1965 Racial Discrimination Act – an act originally intended to protect minorities.
Roy was born in Uitvlught, Guyana, and was the son of an ex-indentured labourer.  It was, according to him, this background of sugar estate life that cultivated his sense of injustice.
All the best,
Juanita Cox
