What’s the evidence for our claim? There has never been a Venezuelan presence in Essequibo going back to Venezuelan War of Independence (1810–1823).

It would be great to have this international dispute resolved once and for all.

A fully agree with Rosaliene! The resolution of the maritime border dispute with Suriname by the International Court of Justice laid the foundations for the oil explorations culminating in the many oil discoveries in recent years. However, I am afraid that Venezuela will never agree to a resolution that will leave Essequibo to the Guyanese. Any leader in Venezuela will use Essequibo as pawn for domestic propaganda. Nevertheless, Guyana should seek a ruling from the ICJ, which will like go in its favour. This also explains why Venezuela refuses to participate.

Once a ruling of the ICJ has been made in favour of Guyana, it should go ahead with oil exploration off the coast of West of the Essequibo but within its maritime boarders. Long-term protection from Venezuelan aggression can only be guaranteed by the United States, whether you like it or not. Given that Exxon has economic interests in Guyana, it is very likely the US will be willing to protect Guyana.
