SURINAME: Tensions rise due to statements by Former Suriname President, Desi Bouterse

Political tensions rose in the Caribbean Community nation of Suriname this week after authorities accused a former president and two-time ex coup maker of threatening the security of the state by calling for the use of ‘weapons’ to combat ills in the society.

Desi Bouterse was this week accused of making irresponsible and inflammatory remarks when he told a National Democratic Party (NDP) forum that there may be the need to again use weapons to deal with a growing list of problems in society that includes increased poverty levels.      Continue reading

In Guyana, ‘old time story’ is a phrase that can be interpreted a couple of different ways. One relates to an argument or feud between families or friends that could date back several generations. Another is the recall of an amusing or striking event that happened in the past and left an indelible impression on your mind.

Guyana: Belgium cocaine bust: GRA recovers image of shipping container suspected in 11.5 ton shipment

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has recovered a key image of a shipping container suspected to have contained 11.5 tons of cocaine that had been busted in Belgium in early November, multiple sources have confirmed.

They have also recovered hundreds of other deleted scans of various containers.

Officials said the process was painstaking and delicate in order not to damage the hard drive that stores images of scanned shipping containers. The officials said the contents of the hard drive were recovered from the Chinese-made scanner by specialised equipment obtained from a key Western Nation that is involved in the global narco-trafficking fight.    Continue reading
