USA: Systemic Racism and Police Killings of Blacks: An Acceptance Speech to Remember

USA: Systemic Racism and Police Killings of Blacks:

An Acceptance Speech to Remember – given by an awardee for his work in the Entertainment Industry. We could not verify his name before this post was released. If you know his name then please put it in the comments.

This young man is right on point. The Black American struggle is well articulated here. Police brutality and shooting of blacks continue daily …

Transcript of Jesse Williams’ Powerful Speech on Race at the 2016 BET Awards

    Megan Lasher | TIME

Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams was awarded 2016 BET’s Humanitarian Award. The outspoken human rights activist — who executive produced the recent documentary, STAY WOKE: THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT — delivered a powerful and political speech about the cause he’s worked so hard on.

Referencing recent victims of police brutality, Williams discussed the violence against black people and the struggles they’ve faced throughout history, when he said:

“THERE HAS BEEN NO WAR THAT WE HAVE NOT FOUGHT AND DIED ON THE FRONT LINES OF. THERE HAS BEEN NO JOB WE HAVEN’T DONE. THERE IS NO TAX THEY HAVEN’T LEVEED AGAINST US – AND WE PAID THEM ALL.”

The speech received a standing ovation by the audience, who went on to praise Williams on Twitter. A transcript of it has been published in multiple places, including The Washington Post and Bustle.

Peace Peace. Thank you, Debra. Thank you, BET. Thank you, Nate Parker, Harry and Debbie Allen for participating in that [video].

Before we get into it, I just want to say I brought my parents out tonight. I just want to thank them for being here, for teaching me to focus on comprehension over career, and that they make sure I learn what the schools were afraid to teach us. And also thank my amazing wife for changing my life.

Now, this award – this is not for me. This is for the real organizers all over the country – the activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do.

It’s kind of basic mathematics – the more we learn about who we are and how we got here, the more we will mobilize.

NOW, THIS IS ALSO IN PARTICULAR FOR THE BLACK WOMEN IN PARTICULAR WHO HAVE SPENT THEIR LIFETIMES DEDICATED TO NURTURING EVERYONE BEFORE THEMSELVES. WE CAN AND WILL DO BETTER FOR YOU.

NOW, WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING IS LOOKING AT THE DATA AND WE KNOW THAT POLICE SOMEHOW MANAGE TO DEESCALATE, DISARM AND NOT KILL WHITE PEOPLE EVERYDAY.

SO, WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN IS WE ARE GOING TO HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS AND JUSTICE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY OR WE WILL RESTRUCTURE THEIR FUNCTION AND OURS.

    [STANDING OVATION]

Now… I got more y’all – yesterday would have been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on a 12 year old playing alone in the park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich.

Tell Rekia Boyd how it’s so much better than it is to live in 2012 than it is to live in 1612 or 1712. Tell that to Eric Garner. Tell that to Sandra Bland. Tell that to Dorian Hunt.

Now the thing is, though, all of us in here getting money – that alone isn’t gonna stop this. Alright, now dedicating our lives, dedicating our lives to getting money just to give it right back for someone’s brand on our body when we spent centuries praying with brands on our bodies, and now we pray to get paid for brands on our bodies.

THERE HAS BEEN NO WAR THAT WE HAVE NOT FOUGHT AND DIED ON THE FRONT LINES OF. There has been no job we haven’t done. There is no tax they haven’t leveed against us – and we’ve paid all of them. But freedom is somehow always conditional here. “You’re free,” they keep telling us. But she would have been alive if she hadn’t acted so… FREE.

NOW, FREEDOM IS ALWAYS COMING IN THE HEREAFTER, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT, THOUGH, THE HEREAFTER IS A HUSTLE. – WE WANT IT NOW.

And let’s get a couple things straight, just a little sidenote – the burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job, alright – stop with all that.

IF YOU HAVE A CRITIQUE FOR THE RESISTANCE, FOR OUR RESISTANCE, THEN YOU BETTER HAVE AN ESTABLISHED RECORD OF CRITIQUE OF OUR OPPRESSION.

If you have no interest, if you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do. SIT DOWN.

We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, yo, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil – black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.

THE THING IS THOUGH… THE THING IS THAT JUST BECAUSE WE’RE MAGIC DOESN’T MEAN WE’RE NOT REAL.

    THANK YOU.

WHY WAS JACOB BLAKE SHOT 7 TIMES BUT KYLE RITTENHOUSE WASN’T A THREAT

Haaretz and The Associated Press | Trevor Noah

‘BLACK SKIN IS THE MOST THREATENING WEAPON OF ALL,’ the comedian says in a viral video on the differences in the police handling of the two incidents in Kenosha

The Daily Show host Trevor Noah called out the double standards of policing tactics used by forces in Kenosha in a video released Wednesday.

The comedian questioned why Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back while Kyle Rittenhouse was peacefully taken into custody one day after allegedly shooting two people and wounding a third during protests over racial injustice.

“I’ll never get used to how quickly police go from issuing demands to using deadly force,” Noah said. “Whatever happened to warning shots? Or tackling a suspect? Are we really meant to believe that the only two options a cop has is do nothing or shoot somebody in the back seven times?”

Noah was referring to an incident in which Blake, 29, was shot in the back seven times as he leaned into his SUV, three of his children seated inside. Kenosha police have said little about what happened other than that they were responding to a domestic dispute.

After several days of protests over the shooting of Blake, Rittenhouse, of Antioch, Illinois, about 15 miles (24.14 kilometers) from Kenosha, was taken into custody in Illinois on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide in the attack Tuesday that was largely captured on cellphone video. The shooting killed two and left a third person wounded.

A video director for the conservative website The Daily Caller tweeted Wednesday that he had conducted a video interview with the suspected gunman before the shooting and posted a clip in which the armed young man, standing in front of a boarded-up building, said “our job is to protect this business.”

“Nobody drives into a city with guns because they love someone else’s business that much. That’s some bullshit. No one has ever thought, ‘Oh, it’s my solemn duty to pick up a rifle and protect that T.J. Maxx.’ They do it because they’re hoping to shoot someone,” Noah said.

“IT REALLY MADE ME WONDER WHY SOME PEOPLE GET SHOT SEVEN TIMES IN THE BACK, WHILE OTHER PEOPLE ARE TREATED LIKE HUMAN BEINGS AND REASONED WITH AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITH NO BULLETS IN THEIR BODIES,” the comedian added.

“The gun doesn’t matter as much as who is holding the gun,” Noah concluded. “Because to some people, Black skin is the most threatening weapon of all.”

In the wake of the killings, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers authorized the deployment of 500 members of the National Guard to Kenosha, doubling the number of troops in the city of 100,000 midway between Milwaukee and Chicago. The governor’s office said he is working with other states to bring in additional National Guard members and law enforcement officers. Authorities also announced a 7 P.M. curfew, though protesters ignored it again Wednesday.

As of early Thursday, the protests were mostly peaceful, in contrast to the violent clashes that marked earlier nights of protests. There were no groups patrolling with long guns as they had on previous nights, and protesters stayed away from a courthouse that had been the site of standoffs with law enforcement.

kamtanblog: I get that you failed English comprehension, BUT ….

What is it about the Jesse Williams’ speech that you did NOT get?

This nonsense about “both sides” is what a white supremacist said while he is holding the whole deck of cards.

    What don’t you get about:

“THERE HAS BEEN NO WAR THAT WE HAVE NOT FOUGHT AND DIED ON THE FRONT LINES OF. THERE HAS BEEN NO JOB WE HAVEN’T DONE. THERE IS NO TAX THEY HAVEN’T LEVEED AGAINST US – AND WE PAID THEM ALL.”

    What don’t you get about:

“Before we get into it, I just want to say I brought my parents out tonight. I just want to thank them for being here, for teaching me to focus on comprehension over career, ……”

What don’t you get while you are mimicking the words of our oppressor?

Those are two galling words, to me: “both sides”!

    • kamtanblog  On August 28, 2020 at 5:37 am

      Clyde
Every story has two sides !
      Every coin also !
Wat is good for goose is also good for gander.

Racism exists in both races…it’s not black and white that matters …it’s more a class issue.
Upper class middle class lower class !
      Which begs the question

      Is it possible “ a classless society “ ?

      Answer
Yes ! And it’s neither capitalism socialism or communism.
It’s “classism” if it’s interpretation is correct.
Prejudices exist in all societies …
      Racism does not !

      Let’s just agree to disagree

Reading and interpretation is influenced by
      ones belief systems !
We certainly need reprogramming our belief
      systems ….
      Change we must
      As die we shall

      Fact !
Not fake, false, fiction or fantasy!
