COVID-19: DO MASKS WORK? A Review Of Science Relevant To Social Policy

April 2020 — Ontario Civil Liberties Association – D. G. Rancourt

KN95 Mask

Summary / Abstract:   MASKS AND RESPIRATORS DO NOT WORK.

There have been extensive randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies, and meta-analysis reviews of RCT studies, which all show that masks and respirators do not work to prevent respiratory influenza-like illnesses, or respiratory illnesses believed to be transmitted by droplets and aerosol particles.

Furthermore, the relevant known physics and biology, which I review, are such that masks and respirators should not work. It would be a paradox if masks and respirators worked, given what we know about viral respiratory diseases: The main transmission path is long-residence-time aerosol particles (< 2.5μm), which are too fine to be blocked, and the minimum-infective-dose is smaller than one aerosol particle.      Continue reading

Guyana: ALONG THE WAY – by Dave Martins + Music video

Credits Sunday Stabroek News. June 14, 2020

My wife, Annette, who most people know from her dedication to environmental matters and Guyanese culture over the years, will occasionally rope me into some project she has going, and one of current ones involves her brain wave to do a video where she shows me a photograph from my life and gets me talking about it.

The photos are from a collection of various Martins family activities going back to our time growing up at Hague and Vreed-en-Hoop, and later Atkinson Field, where I had my first job at B. G. Airways; assembled over the years by my niece Allison who had migrated to Toronto and had carefully collected pictures from hither and thither.        Continue reading

He was a Medical Trailblazer – But at what cost?

James Sims

By: Brynn Holland – HISTORY Magazine

James Marion Sims developed pioneering tools and surgical techniques related to women’s reproductive health.  He is credited as the “father of modern gynecology.” The 19th-century physician has been lionized with statues in New York City, South Carolina and Pennsylvania.

But because Sims’ research was conducted on enslaved Black women without anesthesia, medical ethicists, historians and others have called for those monuments to be removed—or for them to be reconfigured as tributes to the enslaved women known to have endured his experiments.

Venezuela: Trump slams Guaidó while expressing openness in speaking with Maduro

Trump slams Guaidó while expressing openness in speaking with Maduro

Trump and Guaido

By Paul Antonopoulos | June 22, 2020

In what potentially could be a radical change in Washington’s policy towards Venezuela, U.S. president Donald Trump confessed that he has had doubts about his decision to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as president of the South American country.

Trump revealed in an interview with Axios in the Oval Office what he thinks about the self-proclaimed wannabe president of Venezuela, Guaidó, and even confessed that he “would maybe think” of meeting personally with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who has already publicly expressed his willingness to talk with the American president.          Continue reading
