Guyana Folk Festival- Guyana SPEAKS – London UK – Sunday, 26th May 2019
Dear All,
This is a reminder that there will be no Guyana SPEAKS on Sunday, 26th May as we will be joining GUSDA’s Guyana Folk Festival for the Bank Holiday on Monday, 27th May. Please come and join us for fun, interactive family workshops featuring folk songs, proverbs and storytelling. The folk festival will be taking place at the Oasis Academy, Shirley Road, Croydon CR9 7AL. GUSDA’s flyer, including door admission information, is attached for your reference.

Guyana Politics: Links between Roger Khan, Leslie Ramsammy were strong – US Embassy
– says US Charge d’ Affaires Karen Williams in cable dated July 31, 2009

Ramsammy has strongly denied accusations of ties to Khan or having been instrumental in the importation of spying equipment that Khan used to go after criminals.
Williams in a cable dated July 31, 2009 also derided the Guyana Government’s defence that it “could not have authorized the purchase because the (spying) equipment fell under strict U.S. export controls”. It also addressed the suspicious fire that gutted the Ministry of Health building on Brickdam and said that in the wake of the allegations surrounding the fire and Khan’s ties to Ramsammy, the US Embassy would review its relationship with the Ministry of Health. In her comment at the end of the cable, Williams also advised that donor countries should take note of the Guyana Government’s “high tolerance for official corruption”. Continue reading

Since its founding in 1991 Queen’s College of Guyana Alumni Association Toronto Chapter (QCAAT) has contributed to Queen’s College in Guyana a total of approximately CAN$220,000 to assist the students and staff in various ways.
QCAAT’s primary objective is to provide assistance to the school to help maintain its standard of excellence for which it is renowned. The upcoming Father’s Day Brunch to be held on Sunday June 9 is yet another of QCAAT’s events to raise funds to continue this assistance.
Over 42,000 Caribbean nationals overstayed their non-immigrant US visas
Washington, USA – Acting Homeland Secretary, Kevin Mc Aleenan revealed that over 42,000 Caribbean nationals from across the region overstayed their non-immigrant visas and stayed in the US between October 2017 and September 2018. This figure is contained in the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DSH) fiscal year 2018 entry/exit overstay report.
The US government has provided figures to show that overall, in the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM countries, Trinidad and Tobago has the lowest over-stay rate with the United States at 0.40 percent, followed by The Bahamas (0.475), Barbados (1.11 percent), St Kitts and Nevis (1.73 percent), Saint Lucia (1.86 percent) and Belize (1.93 percent). India: Rahul Gandhi: Is this the end of the Gandhi dynasty? – commentary

On May 29, 2019 when Indian PM Narendra Modi won a landslide victory in the Indian elections, Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and leader of India’s Congress party, emerged at the other end, battered and mauled.
He is the primary heir to the ultimate poli tical dynasty. His great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, was the first and longest-serving prime minister of India. His grandmother, Indira Gandhi, was the first female prime minister of the country, and his father was India’s youngest prime minister.
If the 2014 election was Congress’ worst political showing ever, Thursday’s (May 29, 2019) poll delivered a double blow to Mr Gandhi. Congress won just over 50 seats against the 300 plus that Mr Modi’s BJP got; and if that was not bad enough, he lost his own seat in the family bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
