Singular Guyanese (Part 1 of 2) – By Dave Martins
In the arena of creating music for popular consumption, it is sometimes the case that a song about which one is very excited, and generating high expectations, will land like a thud – seemingly totally dismissed by the population. An example is my song “Hit The Road,” which I wrote for a Tradewinds studio session in Toronto, extolling that band-on-the-road aspect of Trinidad carnival. I felt it would do well in Port-of-Spain, but it was simply ignored. In contrast, I did a column here recently, titled Knowing Our Stalwarts, and the response, frankly, surprised me.
Simply put, that column soared where “Hit The Road” crashed and burned. A market vendor in Kitty made it his business to stop me passing and urge me to elaborate on the singular Guyanese I was referring to, and since I pay a lot of attention to what comes from a man of the soil, I’m taking space here today to give my own suggestions for persons we must recognise, apart from the annual awards, in a way that it reaches the population to, in effect, make us all aware of their contributions. Males –Teaching Your Son About Sex.
Males act as very influential fixtures in the lives of their children. It is a well- known and widely-accepted fact that both boys and girls need a strong male to teach and show them how to navigate in our current world. Listen up guys, irregardless of whether or not you are still in an existing relationship with your child/ children’s mother, for the sake of all that is good and expected, do not let any ill feelings existing between the two of you hinder you from having a meaningful relationship with your son or daughter.
Young ladies need a man to show them how they should be treated, and young men need a man to show them how to treat women, provide for a family and above all be a man. So, let us have a discussion about an entity that every boy will experience at some point in his life – SEX. Continue reading
What’s Driving The Rise Of Mental Health Issues And Suicide In Teens?
By Dr. Mark Goulston – Guest Writer – Pride News
Suicide is now the second-leading cause of death for teens (after accidental injury). Further, a new study shows that the number of children and teens in the U.S. who visited the ER for suicidal thoughts and attempts doubled between 2007 and 2015. It’s time to untangle the causes of mental health issues in teens and start saving lives.
Modern life creates a perfect storm that can lead to teen depression, anxiety, and sometimes, suicide. To stop it, we must understand where their pain is stemming from. This’s why we created Stay Alive, a new documentary, available here on YouTube, serving at-risk populations and featuring suicide survivor Kevin Hines and suicide prevention advocate Rayko (#StayAliveNow). Once everyone can empathize with their isolation, pain, and fear, we can offer understanding, and help them feel far less alone.

BROOKLYN, New York April 19, 2019 — New York State Senator, Kevin S. Parker, issued a New York state proclamation for reggae icon and Jamaica Order of Merit recipient, Peter Tosh, last Thursday, that celebrates the life and the legacy of the legend, for this year’s renewal of the national observance of 4/20.
Tosh, whose birth name was Winston Hubert McIntosh, and who was also known as ” Stepping Razor”, has been lauded, over the years, for his relentless fight for the decriminalization of marijuana, and his sterling and steadfast efforts for the global promotion of reggae music, as well as his quest for equal rights and justice.
The proclamation came, just ahead of the 4/20 celebrations for 2019, a national observance of respect for the wide variety and multiple uses of cannabis, including recreational, sacramental and medicinal. Continue reading →
