
VIDEO AT END OF REPORT: APNU+AFC’s Persaud says “YES”
After seven hours of perfunctory debate the National Assembly descended into bedlam last night when Government Parliamentarian Charrandas Persaud voted in favour of a no-confidence motion brought against the government he represents.
Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo just after 9 pm declared after the debate that “the case has been made.” Almost immediately his Chief Whip Gail Teixeira called for a division to which a chuckling Speaker, Dr Barton Scotland replied “honourable member I must first put the question.”
Eventually the question was put with each side striving to outdo the other. The Opposition loudly intoned “yes” while the government benches appeared to deliver a unanimous “no”. Continue reading →

The opposition PPP has announced publicly that its own sweepstakes for the party’s presidential nomination is now open. One would hope that this is not the advertisement for what is open and shut, as in prearranged and predetermined. May the best person (females included) win.
Already, this will be a referendum about those perceived pulling the strings behind the scenes, as opposed to the eventual winner given the mandate to lead the charge. Most of Guyana agrees. Continue reading →

Ex-GRDB accountant deported to face fraud charges in Guyana

A Canadian court has denied an application for refugee status in a case involving Peter Ramcharran, a former Guyana Rice Board official who is wanted to face fraud-related charges in Guyana.
The man has also been ordered deported.
Yesterday, head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Assistant Commissioner, Sydney James, confirmed that his unit has been informed that Ramcharran, the former accountant of the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), was denied his application. Continue reading →

Shocking setback but… APNU/AFC confident – Nagamootoo

Parliamentarians for the government side were bowled over, yesterday. They had no idea that AFC’s Charrandass Persaud who shockingly voted in favor of a no-confidence motion last evening, was going to do so.
There were no indications and in fact, Government Members of Parliament (MPs) were issued with a circular in a briefing session, warning that the vote could not be a conscience vote.
The disclosures were made in a post-vote press conference hosted by Leader of Government Business, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, last evening in a presence of top MPs of the A Partnership For National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC). Continue reading →
