Profile: Romesh Singh -Engineer, Activist and Teacher

Romesh Singh, also known as Romesh Chandra Dutt was a person of many interests. He built radios and radars, set up communication links that brought the world closer and never lost sight of the fact that ordinary people matter. Romesh was one of the foremost telecommunications engineers of his generation that designed complex systems.

He was unassuming but firm in his convictions, and above all, he had an abiding love for his homeland, Guyana.

When you were with Romesh you knew that he stood for what was right. He did not play around with words, or said one thing and meant something else. Romesh was the genuine article, a scholar with varied interests, outspoken in his views, and always giving of his best to the community.

Dr. Narine: I am Romesh’s sister Seeloch and I was truly touched by your article. My brother’s death was so sudden that it was as if a veil had covered me over the past six months. It is lifting very slowly. So I wanted to reach out to his friends to personally thank them. You captured the essence of my brother . He was always there for everyone. He made no distinction between race , color or creed . He truly understood what it was to “live in the moment” . Many times I would call him and found his phone busy. I would say to myself” What is this boy doing?” In a few hours he would call and say I was talking to so and so and many of your names would come up. He made everyone feel special. Thank you so much for remembering him.

    Dear Seeloch,
Thanks for your comments. I am pleasantly surprised to hear from you. Romesh was a special person that made a positive difference in the community. I met his brother Tej at an event a few weeks ago and that led to even more discussions about him. You will be interested to know that his son Dev called me from London after reading this article and we also had a long chat. Romesh is greatly missed. We thank Cyril Bryan for posting these articles and for bringing the community together. My email is and if you send me yours we can continue the conversation. In the meantime thanks again and all the best.
