My Poetry Corner October 2018 features the poem “Clan” from the poetry collection, Providential, by Colin Channer, a novelist and poet born in Kingston, Jamaica. At eighteen, upon completion of high school, he migrated to New York to pursue a career in journalism. He earned a B.A. in Media Communications from Hunter College of the City University of New York. Father of two, he currently lives in New England.

When Channer was six years old, his father, a policeman, left the family, forcing his mother to work two jobs. After her daytime job as a pharmacist at a local hospital, she worked nights in a drugstore. Channer’s collection explores the violence of policing that ruined his father, their fractured relationship, and the challenges of being a better father to his own teenage son.

Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence at PAHO Headquarters  –  by Francis Quamina Farrier

Ministers of Health from the Americas, met at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Headquarters in Washington, DC, USA, from September 23 to 27, for the 56th. Directing Council, where they discussed plans to reduce the shortage in health personnel, lower the burden of cervical cancer, and improve the health of women and adolescents, among other health issues .
 
Among the participating Health Ministers, was Guyana’s Minister of Public Health, Hon. Volda Lawrence, MP. who was gracious in affording me an interview even though her schedule while at the PAHO/WHO Headquarters was extremely busy. “This year’s focus, is generally on Primary Health Care, with all the other aspects of illnesses and diseases, which Primary Health Care focuses on”, she said, adding that, “Guyana did make a presentation on the floor, highlighted our issues, with cancer as a whole.”
