St. Stanislaus College students attained 96.23% overall passes in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and 96.03% at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).
According to a press release issued by the school, the students’ results at the 2018 CSEC and CAPE continue to maintain the traditional high standards of the 152-year-old institution.

There are many ‘paradises’ on Earth. A few are in Guyana. Some are spectacular while others display nature’s simplicity. On the Essequibo Coast, between the villages of Queenstown and Little Affiance, south-west of the coastal highway, a rustic road takes you to a vista of spectacular simplicity and beauty – Lake Capoey!
The name, according to Ralph Hendricks, the village toshao (Leader), means ‘rising of the moon’ –and curiously, is said to be a Wapisiana word, for a decidedly Arawak community with a population of about 500 people. Bob Marley was first and foremost a political singer; he used his talents to articulate and convey political messages. Reggae music is by definition political music; its birth and evolution were a response to the dynamics of political independence in Jamaica and the Caribbean. But while reggae artistes have concentrated on mild political messages, Marley and a few other have stuck to the hardcore, direct political messages.

The largest number of United States Congressmen descended on Guyana recently, creating history since Guyana became an independent country. Guyana had already entered the record books by being the venue where the first United States Congressman was killed outside the United States.
In 1978, Congressman Leo Ryan, in response to an appeal by relatives of some people living in Jonestown, then the headquarters of the People’s Temple headed by self-styled Reverend Jim Jones, travelled to Guyana. Continue reading

One in five vanilla ice-creams has no vanilla, cream or fresh milk
Britain’s longest heatwave since 1976 has seen ice-cream sales soar, but a survey has revealed that some brands are sold without vanilla, cream or fresh milk.
Vanilla has traditionally been Britain’s favourite flavour but a Which? investigation of supermarket and branded vanilla ice-creams found a number of them were lacking some key ingredients.
One in five of the ice-creams examined by the consumer watchdog had none of the three ingredients shoppers might reasonably expect to find in vanilla ice-cream. Only half of the 24 surveyed contained all three traditional ingredients.
