Moving U.S. embassy to Jerusalem is major victory for Trump-loving white evangelicals

The relocation of the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday, May 14, will mark a major triumph for white evangelicals, who gave President Donald Trump 81 percent of their votes.

Trump signaled his intention on Dec. 6, 2017, when he defied the wishes of 128 countries who, despite a blackmail threat by the president, voted for a United Nations resolution declaring as “null and void” the Israelis’ decision to make Jerusalem their capital.       Continue reading →

Three Worlds One Vision

Today on Mother’s Day in America, families are celebrating the day with their mothers and grandmothers. While my sons will mark the day by joining me in activities I enjoy, I see no cause to celebrate motherhood.

Where is the joy of motherhood, I ask myself, when you live in fear of ICE agents separating you from your American-born children? Where is the joy in motherhood when your hours of labor value little to provide food and shelter for your children? Where is the joy in motherhood when intolerance, bullying, and hate put your children’s lives at risk? Where is the joy in motherhood when you watch your child suffer for lack of medical treatment?

Why, I ask myself, do we bring children into a hostile world that no longer fights for their right to life once they leave our womb? Why do we bring children into a world facing…

On the streets of multicultural Brixton there’s a warm enthusiasm for Saturday’s ‘more inclusive’ wedding

A bank holiday and more than 5,000 street parties marked the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011, but with less than a week to go until Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marry at Windsor Castle, the mood has shifted to embrace what has been called “a modern royal romance”. This wedding feels more relaxed, more inclusive, and on the streets of Brixton, south London, at least, is being met with enthusiasm.

“It’s brilliant. This wedding represents modern Britain,” says nursery manager Saba Abay, 30. Four months ago, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Brixton, which is home to Britain’s largest African-Caribbean community, in their second official engagement as a couple.

Here is a quotation from one of your bhajans ( hymns)

Maa teree mamta, kitnee pyaree

Kitnee pyaar jagatee hai

This translates as follows;

Mother, how great is your love

How much love does it awaken in me.

In another bhajan in your Atma Geet, it says; Maata, putra se pyar, kaun karega itnaa..Yes, the love a mother has for her son, who can exceed that love.And if I may quote a poem I learnt in school as a child;

Micro-aggression and the Caribbean Diaspora: A Perspective

There is a dimension of the immigrant experience that has not received much attention.  Micro-aggression is a concept used by psychologists to describe a phenomenon in multi ethnic societies such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. According to Derald Wing Sue and colleagues, micro aggressions can be defined as, “brief and common place daily verbal, behavioral and environmental indignities, intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory or negative slights and insults to the target person or group”.

Micro-aggression may be an expression of contempt, fear, power, self-defense, implicit bias or discrimination. It may also signify a lack of knowledge of a particular group of people. The author will examine this phenomenon as it relates to the English speaking Caribbean Diaspora, with implications for the wider immigrant community. Personal narratives are used to highlight examples and consequences of micro-aggression. An in-depth, empirical-based study on the topic is forthcoming.   Continue reading →

The National Assembly on Friday May 11 2018 approved in excess of $2.5B in supplementary provisions to be expended in addition to previously voted amounts for the Annual Budget.
