Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo forecasts a 50,000 vote defeat of the governing coalition if more of his People’s Progressive Party supporters are registered and go out to cast their ballots at the next general elections.

Under the proportional representation electoral system, a seat is equivalent to about 5,000 votes. The A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change barely clinched a one-seat majority in the 65-seat National Assembly at the May, 2015 general and regional elections.    Continue reading

Last week, Google confirmed that it has provided artificial intelligence software to assist the United States military and intelligence apparatus in analyzing data as part of its drone war and assassination program in the Middle East and beyond.The website Gizmodo, which first broke the story, reported that the military program using Google is called Project Maven. A military report announcing the project last year said it “focuses on computer vision—an aspect of machine learning and deep learning—that autonomously extracts objects of interest from moving or still imagery.”

Marine Corps Col. Drew Cukor, identified as the “chief of the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Function Team in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Operations Directorate-Warfare Support,” said at the time that the US is “in an AI arms race,” and noted that “Eric Schmidt [executive chairman of Google’s parent company, Alphabet] is calling Google an AI company.”

The largest mass shooting to ever occur was the 2014 Garissa University College Attack in Garissa, Kenya. 148 victims perished in the attack.

Statistics show that the number of mass shooting victims has increased significantly over the past four decades. In fact, the term “mass shooting” has only emerged in recent decades.  When it comes to dealing with gun massacres, the United States of America is unique in an unfortunate way.
