During the reign of the Soviet Union, communist countries could be found in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some of these nations, like the People’s Republic of China, were (and still are) global players in their own right. Other communist countries, such as East Germany, were essentially satellites of the U.S.S.R. that played a significant role during the Cold War but no longer exist.

Communism is both a political system and an economic one. Communist parties have absolute power over governance, and elections are single-party affairs. The party controls the economic system as well, and private ownership is illegal, although this facet of communist rule has changed in some countries like China.   Continue reading

  • No need to have a party once a year. Every day should be International Women’s Day.

In 1910, at a conference of more than 100 women from seventeen countries, Clara Zetkin, leader of the “women’s office” for the German Social Democratic Party tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day.  It was her suggestion that every country should honor women on one day every year to push for their demands.

This was agreed on leading to the formation/ birth of International Women’s Day. On March 19, 1911 IWD was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. . In 1913, it was decided to transfer International Women’s Day to March 8, and it has remained on that day ever since.   Continue reading

Last week Monday, the Rastafari community had a march from Buxton to Square of the Revolution.

However, psychically twisted, psychologically depraved, and mentally ill-shaped society is in Guyana, classes, strata and organisations are generally honest about their feelings, attitudes, and postures toward their fellow Guyanese; that trait should be respected.

You cannot be left to hang out to dry when you dealing with honest humans. You will find their beliefs awfully nauseating but you will not be deceived by them because they show you without subtleties how they feel.        Continue reading
