Last year it was 8 men, then down to 6, and now almost 5.

While Americans fixate on Trump, the super-rich are absconding with our wealth, and the plague of inequality continues to grow. An analysis of 2016 data found that the poorest five deciles of the world population own about $410 billion in total wealth. As of 06/08/17, the world’s richest five men owned over $400 billion in wealth. Thus, on average, each man owns nearly as much as 750 million people.   [Read more]

Many men and women (men moreso) talk ruefully of the emotional emptiness they feel, when they think about their father. They may sense love there, but also a big question mark—What did he feel?  What did he stand for?  What did I mean to him?  Father’s Day will soon be here and it’s an apt time to ponder on the topic.

The secondary school I attended hosted an annual Father/ son Day concert. The disc jockey (whose job it appeared to my youthful mind was to see that all fathers made fools of themselves) lined fathers on one side of the hall facing sons on the other. The challenge was to see which side could sing the loudest to certain selected songs.    Continue reading

Individuals, families, groups, organizations, institutions and countries all have some tradition or the other for which they are very proud. Traditions make for cohesion, and cohesion makes for good understanding and happier people.

More recently in Guyana, a Ministry of Social Cohesion was established, tasked with bringing Guyanese of varying races, cultures, religions and politics closer and hopefully, all Living the Good Life in Peace and Love and Harmony. There is still that unanswered question; “Will Guyana ever really become “One People, One Nation, One Destiny”, as states the country’s National Motto?

If one were to look closely at Guyana, one can come to the conclusion that such an objective, though difficult, can be achieved. It is indeed a worthy objective, for who in their right mind would choose war and its miseries, instead of peace and its joys; and peace is better achieved when people accept that whoever created us, had in the Master Plan, DIVERSITY.   Continue reading
