Guyana Unity Movement marks end of 51St Anniversary of Independence events

The 90-degree temps on Sunday, June 11, was the perfect atmosphere for the Guyana Unity Movement Inc. to bring down the curtain on its massive charity fund-raising Guyana Unity Day concert at Jefferson School Football field in Brooklyn, to celebrate Guyana’s 51st Anniversary of Independence, that began with a weekend of events on June 9.

Hundreds of Guyanese waved flags, and danced to music by Guyana Baboo – Terry Gajraj, Menes de Groit and the Shanto Rhythms, Chronicle Atlantic Steel Orchestra and many others, during the hours-long presentation put on by organizers of the nonprofit group.

On May 25, 2010 the then President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo assented to the Sexual Offences Bill, a significant bill that included input from concerned citizens and schoolchildren. Within the said Bill are also provisions and penalty outlined for dealing with the media. It is clearly stipulated that if the media is irresponsible and if they put victims of sexual abuse through a second set of trauma after they’ve suffered these serious abuses, then they will pay the penalty too.      Continue reading →

The “Happy Canada Day” signs are already planted in front yards and the country is preparing to celebrate a birthday on Saturday, 150 years since British and French Canada bonded together to form a confederation.

It can be hard for physicians to follow current thinking of experts on medical care. It must be exponentially harder for the public to make sense of it. Recently, the United States Preventive Services Task Force changed its recommendation on prostate cancer screening from a D (that is, don’t do it) to a C (discuss it with your doctor).

Although there seemed to be a lot of coverage of this announcement in the news media, and a fair amount of excitement, there are two things men should know. First, it’s a good thing that recommendations change over time; second, this change isn’t as big a deal as you might think.   Continue reading →

They came as slaves: human cargo transported on British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. Some were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.    Continue reading →
