Thirty-one women from various fields are among those who will be conferred with National Awards on the occasion of the 51st Anniversary of Guyana’s Independence for their outstanding service and sterling contributions toward national development.
The awards will be conferred by President David Granger on behalf of the Guyana government.
Leading the list of 69 awardees is Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Madame Yonette Decina Cummings-Edwards, who has been recognised with the Order of Roraima. Madame Justice Edwards, who boasts an illustrious legal career that commenced in 1988, was sworn in to her current post on March 28, 2017. She served as a Judge on the Court of Appeal of Guyana for several years and is now the second woman to be appointed to the position of Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary. Continue reading
China set to invest massively in Latin America and the Caribbean
China set to invest massively in Latin America and the Caribbean
Published on May 25, 2017 – caribbeannewsnow.com
MIAMI, USA — Historically, Latin America and the Caribbean have long looked to the US for support in terms of trade and investment, yet have often been left wanting. Now good times seem to be on the horizon, thanks to the promise of truly massive Chinese investment and trade that will completely overhaul and regenerate both regions in the coming years.
For more than a century, the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean have gazed hopefully at the United States and its vast wealth, hoping for solid investment and consistent trade that would elevate those regions out of the realms of the “Third World” and instead to a level on par with the US and Europe.

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney- Eric Gonzalez: working for immigrant communities’ rights
Brooklyn acting DA working for immigrant communities’ rights
By Tangerine Clarke – May 20, 2017 – Caribbean Life News
Acting Brooklyn District Attorney, Eric Gonzalez told Guyanese nationals that they should be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness in the justice criminal system.
During brief remarks on May 13, at the Guyana Action Committee’s Annual Brunch and Mother’s Day honors in Brooklyn, Gonzalez said he is most proud of the strides he made alongside former DA Ken Thompson, (deceased) to ensure the criminal justice system gets fairer, adding that he created an immigration policy to push back from what is coming from Washington DC.
Gonzalez who will be running to become the next Brooklyn district attorney this fall, noted that for more than 20 years, prosecutors have been directly told not to discuss anyone’s immigration status when arrested, just to get the conviction and let immigration lawyers deal with immigration matters. CLIMATE CHANGE IS FOR REAL – by Francis Quamina Farrier
CLIMATE CHANGE IS FOR REAL – by Francis Quamina Farrier
Francis Quamina Farrier
So it’s been raining in Guyana on and off since New Year’s Day 2017. Fact is, it has been raining more than not raining; and there seems to be no pattern as to when, how and where the rain will fall. The most certain thing about rainfall over the past three decades, is that there is no pattern; the rain falls at all odd times, and also in all odd places and in many cases, resulting in flooding. My question to you is; “Should it rain tomorrow morning, will you be singing that popular song by The Carpenters, “Rainy Days and Mondays always gets me down”?
Guyanese used to joke about it raining whenever Test cricket comes to town, but it seems now that whenever a group of boys or girls go out anywhere to play bat-and-ball, the rain comes. Continue reading →
