Time to R. E. B. U. I. L. D the Black Community

By Yvonne Sam

The Merriam Webster dictionary thus defines the word “development” –the act or process of growing or causing something to grow, or become larger or more advanced.  The word is also defined as “the act or process of creating something over a period of time”.  The truth be told, if we expect our communities to grow, become larger and more advanced as we create something noteworthy and significant over a period of time, then we must hanker after “development more than anything else.  It is time for the Black community to be rebuilt.

Frederick Douglass a 19th century African –American social reformer, writer and abolitionist is quoted as saying, “I prayed for 20 years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs”. When it comes to the multiplicity of things that the Black community finds itself dealing with, the issues sometimes seem overwhelming and  insufferable, but  we have to learn how  to step up to the plate to bring about the change we seek, otherwise it will not happen. We are as a people living in some extremely challenging times, especially as it relates to the economy and social change. However if we do not make a conscious decision as a people to rebuild the Black community, we are going to see it gradually erode before our very eyes , and there would be little that we can do to reverse the end result.

Sad to say but if the truth should be told, one of the biggest factors between the success and failure in rebuilding the Black community is a lack of vision, and allowing individuals who do not have our  best interest at heart to deter us. When it comes to the issue of rebuilding, there will be enemies and naysayers. For those familiar with the Good Book Nehemiah, who had a passion for his people and a desire to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, is a prime example of what I am speaking about.  In just 52 days the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt and restored, so that the

people could once again feel safe in their own community. Needed in order to rebuild the wall in Black communities all across Canada are—- the right remnant of people to get the job done: the right tools to work with: and the right weapons to fight with.

For a kick start as a people we need to do the following in order to R.E.B.U.I.L.D  the Black community.

Reactivate , research and seek out information that well need to know so that we can advance towards progress, especially now that we have access to so many resources.

Educate ourselves by going and returning  to school, learning trades, attending colleges, taking online classes and seeking out mentors wherever they may be found.

Buying Land and Property, and then learning how to maintain that land and keep the property safe and protected

Understanding above all the indomitable Power of Unity, because we can do more as a team than we can do as individuals

Inclusion of the Youth in everything we do. Young people are the leaders of tomorrow and in addition, the youth of today know how to do new and innovative things to help us move forward, especially in the areas of modern technology

Lead when others fail to do so. Just think of this if you would not  step up to lead. Who will?

Development is the key to success

In conclusion as a people we need to memorize and learn how to embrace the “D” word. Our progress depends on it, and we need it for our survival. Our ingenuity, creativity, talent and skills can only take us so far, notwithstanding the fact that it is our perseverance, combined with unrelenting faith (in the face of the many obstacles) that will sustain us.

Many reading this may want to go further than they or loved ones have ever gone, and there may be many others yearning to experience something bigger and better in their lives.  Let us not forget that if it was easy for us to accomplish the things necessary to rebuild our communities, then it would have been done by now. So we must now get to work with the remnant of people who have the desire to rebuild.

If you are truly ready and prepared with helping to rebuild the Black community, then join me now in saying ——–It’s time to R.E.B.U.I.L.D
