Coretta Scott King Lives! – By Dr. Dhanpaul Narine
Coretta Scott King Lives! – By Dr. Dhanpaul Narine
It is Black History Month. The schools have dusted the books from last year; lesson plans on the achievements of a few Blacks will be highlighted.
At the end of the month the books will be packed away until next year. In many school districts Black History is confined to a month. But Black History is American History and it should be an essential part of the daily curriculum. If people are not reminded of their history apathy occurs; they lose their sense of belonging and ‘drift in the desert sand of dead habit.’ Civics is not a strong subject with our children.
While they talk about the latest video games, smart technology and brand-name products the achievements of Black heroes escape them. Black History is rich with examples of perseverance and the struggles for acceptance and recognition in a world in which the deck is stacked against peoples of color. Continue reading
Donald Trump will NOT Attend White House Correspondents’ Dinner – commentary
Donald Trump will NOT Attend White House Correspondents’ Dinner
Martin Pengelly | The Guardian UK
Donald Trump on Saturday capped a week of tumultuous relations with the press by saying he will not attend this year’s White House correspondents’ dinner, which is scheduled for 29 April 2017.
“I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year,” the president wrote on Twitter. “Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”
The news came as relations between the Trump administration and the news media, which he has called “the enemy of the American people”, have sunk to new lows. On Friday, leading outlets including the New York Times, CNN and the Guardian were excluded from a briefing by press secretary Sean Spicer while friendlier conservative organisations were admitted.
Editors of excluded organisations expressed anger, although White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) president Jeff Mason, of Reuters, attempted to calm troubled waters. Continue reading

This now extinct character, owes its origins to pre-emancipation days; a time when Carnival was celebrated exclusively by the plantocracy. While the slaves and free coloureds were confined to their own segregated celebrations, the plantocracy, on the other hand, was free to imitate the dress and customs of their slaves. The Negue Jadin (or field slave) was one such beloved Carnival costume.
Upon the abolition of slavery, former slaves were free to celebrate and adopted the Negue Jadin character in their celebrations, albeit ironically. Continue reading
With the USA Distracted by Trump and the UK by Brexit, they’re about to see a Decline in their Global Power
With the USA Distracted by Trump and the UK by Brexit, they’re about to see a Decline in their Global Power
Patrick Cockburn | Independent UK
Boris Yeltsin was making a presidential visit to Washington in 1995 when he was found one night outside the White House dressed only in his underpants. He explained in a slurred voice to USA secret service agents that he was trying to hail a cab so he could go and buy a pizza. The following night he was discovered by a guard, who thought he was an intruder, wandering drunkenly around the basement of his official residence. Continue reading →
