We had to read the book in school. Many of us were fascinated to learn that a Guyanese had written the book ‘To Sir, With Love’ and that it was made into a movie as well. When the movie was shown in Georgetown politicians and other dignitaries turned out and Guyana was on the map for the right reasons.

The author E.R. Braithwaite recalled his experiences while teaching in a school in London’s East End. An account that involved a black teacher in a classroom of white unruly students has the ingredients of a good story and Brathwaite told it in an easy reading style in which the reader could connect. The fact that it was made into a movie was an added bonus.

I appreciate how hard you’ve worked for this country for the past five decades.
I hope this finds you well. I’ve been meaning to write you for a while. I was thinking of you again today and I guess I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you.

I appreciate your dignity in the face of the most undignified behaviour.
I appreciate the seriousness with which you took the prospect of leading our nation.
I appreciate the campaign of diversity, equality, and shared strength you ran with such grace.
