The Investiture Ceremony at the National Cultural Centre on October 5, 2016 was an uplifting event. Those fortunate to be present were able to witness the best of Guyanese, most of them unknown to the public but who have dedicated all or most of their lives to the service of Guyana.

For a brief moment at the ceremony, and later in media reports, Guyana is reminded of the numerous Guyanese who contribute daily, and for entire lifetimes, to the welfare of other Guyanese. It is hardly to be expected that such Guyanese set about their decades’ long service with the objective of eventually obtaining a national award.    Continue reading

People forget that Hillary Clinton has spent her life being a trailblazer for women and she has taken a lot of slings and arrows for it.  I remember when Hillary Clinton was First Lady, I was so happy that we finally had a First Lady role model that I could identify with. 

Although Barbara Bush is a lovely lady by every measure, I couldn’t really identify with her because I was getting my law degree and planning on being a working mother while working my way up through my law firm.  Hillary’s life path was more similar to my future life plan and more aspirational to me.  I looked up to her that she, as First Lady, was accomplished in her own right in the workforce and was an equal to her husband.    Continue reading

Remember Gary Hart? In a big political campaign the little moments count. Privacy is obliterated as the media’s perpetual hunger for news unmasks the tiniest details of impropriety. In the case of Gary Hart they didn’t have to look far. He gave the media the juicy details of his private life on a platter. It was Hart who told reporters ‘to follow me around. I don’t care. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They’d be very bored.’

But the media had the last laugh. A report from the Miami Herald stated that Hart was having a dalliance with a woman that was not his wife. He was messing around in real time with Donna Rice, in a boat appropriately named ‘Monkey Business.’ The animal, it turned out, could not be tamed.
