At the 2016 CARICOM summit in Georgetown, Guyana the leaders discussed the formation of a Caribbean Single Market Economy.(CSME). Is this a prelude to the revival of the West Indian Federation which was disbanded in 1962? The recent Brexit referendum may be an incentive to revisit the Federation idea. After more than 50 years of going it alone the micro state islands of the Caribbean should know what works and what does not. Obviously they think that closer cooperation is necessary. Let’s hope that common sense will prevail.
One of the problems of the Caribbean is that we don’t have a tradition and history of good management practices. We could not get it from the British because they did not have one. They were about military conquest. Two things I don’t see. The overall organisational authority to pull entities in the countries together. These are independent countries and none would submit to the authority of others. Secondly, discussion of the practical benefits for the man in the street. Clive Thomas did a research years back that did not promise much but things have changed.
Indeed
Maybe now that UK will be free to trade with ROW some sort of alignment for trade could be
negotiated…commonwealth trade MK2
UK not unlike USA is certainly heading
towards me first others second/after.
Not sure if agreement with Emglish
speaking Carribean is at all possible !
Nothing tried nothing gained.
Can see UK renewing its trade ties
with commonwealth nations OZ NZ
CAD et al but with benefit to UKPLC.
Worth consideration by CSME.
Just an idea on way forward.
Needs exploring now Guyana has
found oil it can play a leading role.
Early days but must remain optimistic.
