Less Than 24 Hours After Dallas, Hillary Delivers One of the Most Important Speeches of the Election

    By Scan

It’s time to admit that Hillary Clinton is an underrated orator. While her delivery doesn’t usually match the finesse and dynamics displayed in memorable speeches by her husband or President Obama, that’s an unfair standard.

Judged on her own substance-over-style merits, without constantly being compared to two of the greatest political speechmakers in modern American history, she does just fine. And sometimes a lot better than that.

Arriving less than 24 hours after the horrific events in Dallas, yesterday’s powerful speech in Philadelphia was one of the best and most important of this entire election season, both in terms of substance and delivery. Everyone in the USA should watch this:

FiveThirtyEight: Police Are Killing Black People As Often As Before Ferguson —

  • Clyde Duncan  On 07/11/2016 at 3:45 am

The Guardian newspaper runs its own database, The Counted, which tracked US killings by police and other law enforcement agencies in 2015, and counted 1140 killed, …

… with rates per million of 2.92 for “WHITE” people, 7.2 for “BLACK”, and 3.5 for “HISPANIC/LATINO”, 1.34 for “Asian/Pacific Islander”, and 3.4 for “Native American”.

The database can be viewed by state, gender (1086 male, 53 female, 1 nonconforming) , race/ethnicity, age, classification (e.g., “gunshot”), and whether the person killed was armed (853 armed, 224 unarmed). The database has continued to add new cases into 2016.

I was just reading this essay in the Daily Kos from a reporter who was commenting on something the Lieutenant-Governor said on air – the reporter called him a fool.

The Lt.-Governor of Texas blamed the protesters and “Black Lives Matter”; and Jesse Jackson and others for the mayhem and shooting in Dallas.

The Lt.-Governor, another Republican-Tea Party Fool said that all these people got big-mouths and should shut up.

Meanwhile, the reporter was in his office a few blocks away and heard the shooting while he was watching a hockey game where the Rangers were getting beaten badly – so he turned out the lights, in case – and kept on watching TV – that is how it is, today, in the USA.

    The reporter wrote:

A white man in America doesn’t die for selling cigarettes on a street corner, he gets a ticket. A white man in America doesn’t die for driving with a broken tail light; he gets a ticket. The officers who abuse the badge and the power of God strapped to their hip and the authority to use it should be punished, but too many times they are not.

As one of those on the city streets last night told a reporter, the shooter might have killed the good cops.

America’s problem has come to Dallas now, and our lieutenant governor blames the peaceful protestors, because our lieutenant governor is a fool.

It was not just an attack on the Dallas police; it was an attack on our basic humanity and the common decency we used to cherish in America.

But that’s all gone now — we lost that a long time ago.

The Rangers lost Thursday night, 10 to 1. And I’m almost embarrassed to tell you I know that, the reporter added.
