Eh, no surprise Guyana is following the US on beating up on “drilling and teaching to the test.” Dr Roopernarine, those “antiquated methods” are still very much promoted and practiced because, contrary to western bashing of memorizing/drilling by Asians, Asians still dominate in the STEM fields. Why is that? Is it by committing learning to long term memory and freeing up their brains to explore news pursuits to also commit to long term memory? The west may have banished this method of learning to dumb down their population at one time but I can assure you that it is back. However, it is given a new education buzzword called “rehearsal.” The hours and hours of rehearsal that performers in all fields endure to master their performance.

I graduated this spring with a dual BA degree in childhood elementary education and special education with a concentration in Social Science. I also had to take 5 exams to become certified as a teacher in NY. Four of these these exams were timed and the fifth was an 80+ page portfolio submission (edTPA Special Education). One of the exams, CST Multi-Subject, is a combination of several subjects including math. Not only was the use of a calculator not allowed, math formulas were not provided to answer some of the questions. If one has not committed to REHEARSING multiplication facts and formulas, one would not be able to complete the exam in the allotted time and one would fail the exam. Spending 10 minutes to answer a question that only allows you 2 minutes is a recipe for failure. Spending 10 minutes to laboriously figure out 8×7, or the square root of 9 + 8, or the area and/or perimeter of a weird shaped fence, or the distance from point A to B to C to D will cost you dearly. Drilling/rehearsing was what helped me passed all 5 of my exams and not just the math portion. Remembering Blooms taxonomy; the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Bandura, Brunner; IDEA, NCLB, ESEA/ESSA; IEPs, 504 plans, ABA, FBA, BIP, RtI; all the various disabilities and teaching strategies/accommodations/modifications; all the latest buzzwords in education to show you are keeping abreast of the latest changes/reforms – teachers as facilitators (teachers no longer teach), best practices, reflective practitioner, differentiated instruction, scaffolding (ZPD), multi-modal learning, multiple intelligences approach, etc, etc, etc – the list is long, And all of this stuff I had to remember had to do with me “rehearsing.”

Now for his “antiquated” remark on “teaching to the test.” The new buzzword is ‘benchmarks’ and the new buzzword of test is ‘assessment.’ Benchmark assessments are administered to students to provide reflective practitioners with immediate and ongoing feedback to facilitate students’ learning outcomes through modification and or accommodation of the curriculum goals . In layman’s terms, if, for example, the school/teacher decides that 3rd grade students will learn their 2x table the week of September 1 – 5. Firstly, the teacher prepares a five day lesson plan to include informal and formal assessments on teaching students the 2x table. Next, she goes about her task of teaching, incorporating pop quizzes and exit slips to assess daily learning. Finally she administers an end of lesson assessment. If, the teacher teaches the lesson but does not “assess” students’ learning, she is basically teaching blind because she has no way of knowing if the students learned the lesson. Yes she taught it BUT DID THEY GET IT? The only way for her to know is by “assessing” the learning outcome of the lesson, i.e, “teaching to the test” to measure learning. You have to have some standard to measure against. And there’s needs to be accountability to the parents, the taxpayers and the system. It is not surprising that the private schools get it. Parents should not have to pay EXTRA for this but they do because the system has failed.

I cannot count the times that I have endured all sorts of criticism for my method of learning. I went through the era of reciting tables, poems, songs etc. from memory. I would end, rather tamely, with some remark like, “What can I say?” or “Works for me”.
It was not so long ago that I looked at the following site; and understood why it worked.

    Another interesting perspective here:-
