Brexit Outcome Is a Vote Against the World – Anshel Pfeffer – Haaretz

Brexit Outcome Is a Vote Against the World – Anshel Pfeffer – Haaretz

The victory of the ‘leave’ campaign to exit the EU reflected millions of Britons’ resentment, estrangement, jealousy and anger with the existing order.

brexitLONDON – The atmosphere in the British capital throughout voting on Thursday’s EU referendum was optimistic. On the streets, outside Tube stations, in windows and doorways, it was almost exclusively signs and activists with the slogans “IN” and “remain.” Members of rival parties – the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats – all cooperated in bringing out “their” voters to the polls. The heavy rain caused delays on rail lines and slightly decreased turnout, but it was merely a slight worry, no more.

But London was never so detached from the rest of the United Kingdom.  The victory of the “leave” campaign in the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union was greeted with complete shock in the early hours of Friday morning. Only a few hours earlier, when the polling stations closed at 10 P.M., the pollsters, journalists and even politicians in both camps were pretty certain that a small majority would vote to stay in the EU.   Continue reading

In the wake of Britain’s unprecedented vote to leave the European Union on Thursday, the initial wave of reaction was tumultuous: Prime Minister David Cameron resigned, global markets plunged, and right-wing leaders across Europe cheered—stoking fears that other nations may hold similar referendums to depart the EU in the future.

“The British people have made the very clear decision to take a different path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction,” Cameron announced to the press on Friday. “I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.”  Read more link below >>>

Barbados: CROPOVER 2016 Soca Songs – 4 music videos

On November 30 Barbados celebrates its Golden Jubilee  as an independent country so this Cropover Carnival promises to be one of the best.

Rihanna at Barbados Cropover Parade

Barbados holds its Cropover Carnival in July every year. Scores of songs are created , many becoming quite popular in the Caribbean and the Diaspora. There are basically two main competitions – Calypso featuring social commentary and SOCA featuring Dance music where winners are awarded  cars  and cash prizes.  See 2016 calendar here

There is also the Cropover Carnival Parade on August Monday (August 1) at which the most popular Road March is selected – It looks like Peter Ram – All Ah We “2016 Soca” could win the Road March title this year (see below). Of course Rihanna will be in attendance as she does every year.

Here are just four songs from Barbados Cropover 2016 Soca tunes which have become quite popular. Of course there are others… Just check YouTube.   More info: Barbados Cropover Festival  Continue reading

Opinion - commentary -analysis

SINCE losing power, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has been hammering the new Government on alleged discrimination of persons in the Government system who are known to be PPP members and supporters.

The point-man for this campaign is former president, Donald Ramotar. Mr. Ramotar has been trying to proverbially ‘suck cane and blow whistle’ at the same time. He has argued that the Government has been going specifically after African Guyanese PPP members and supporters; then, in the same breath, he has charged the Government with ethnic cleansing of Indian Guyanese from the Public Service. In the June 18, 2016 edition of the Guyana Times, he complained about ethnic cleansing at GuySuCo, and listed nine persons — all Indian Guyanese — whom he claims were either “dismissed, asked to resign, or pressured to resign.”  Continue reading
