Moments after being criticised by the main Parliamentary Opposition’s Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Raphael Trotman, fired back. He described Jagdeo’s comments as nothing but “trash”.

Earlier yesterday during a Press Conference hosted by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) at the party’s Headquarters in Robb Street Georgetown, Jagdeo heavily criticized the move made by Trotman to review the 1999 Exxon Mobil contract.    Continue reading →

If you think the spelling of her name is unusual wait until you hear her voice. It has depth and range and it can hit the high notes to stand alongside the best in the business.

Rkhty, pronounced (Ruh-keh-ti) recently performed at two venues in New York and she received wonderful reviews in both places.

The first was at City Hall in New York in which she paid tribute to Guyana at its Jubilee Celebrations. Rkhty’s performance was one of the most poignant of the evening. She followed this by serenading the audience at the Symposium on Guyana at York College and here again the audience was left wanting more.   Continue reading →

Will the American public passively permit another massive bailout of the banks? Will it accept more punishing programs of austerity to pay for this bailout? Will a viable socialism rise out of the economic chaos to halt further looting of the U.S. Treasury and the continued reconfiguration of the economy into neofeudalism? Yes, Folks, I proudly admit that I was one of the older Guyanese who became emotional and did shed a tear at mid-night of May 25/26, 1966 when Guyana gained its Independence from Britain. However, I have to say that it was not quite the same, fifty years later, as I was seated in one of the stands at Jubilee Park in Georgetown, for the Flag Raising Ceremony, celebrating Guyana’s Fiftieth Independence Anniversary. The Big Jubilee Party which so many travelled so many miles to be part of, is now over. The memories are varied; “Enjoyable”, “Not so enjoyable”, and “disappointing”.

We who were there at the National Park in Georgetown, FIFTY YEARS ago, had the privilege of witnessing the Union Jack (the British flag) slowly coming down, as our brand new Golden Arrowhead (the Guyana flag) was slowly hoisted officially, for the very first time, by the then 21 year old GDF Officer, Desmond Roberts.
