Book – DEMERARA GOLD – from solo play by Ingrid Griffith

Book – Demerara Gold – By Ingrid Griffith

Demerara GoldDEMERARA GOLD is a solo play in two acts by Ingrid Griffith. It is a coming-of-age-story of the unconquerable spirit of a seven-year old girl left in the clutches of her two grandmothers in the Caribbean after her parents suddenly get visas to the USA. Ingrid cherishes a ring of Demerara gold given to her as a token of her parents promise to return.
When she finally rejoins her parents in America five years later, she finds her father railing at “this blasted life”, her mother wrestling with her disappointments and a life burdened by a family secret. Ingrid Griffith tells her own story in this dramatic solo performance featuring no less than eighteen characters. She ably weaves her country’s history, her family’s story, and the experience of migration and assimilation into timeless theatre magic.

Ms Ingrid Griffith is a GREAT Guyanese talent. I saw Demerara Gold TWICE, and I plan to see it yet again whenever it comes to my neck of the woods. As a retired Director of Drama at the Ministry of Culture in Guyana, I highly recommend this one-character play – and the book – to everyone. Your “Uncle Francis” sends congratulations to you Ingrid. All the very best for continuing successes. Go for it girl!
