‘I always wanted to be a cop. When I completed my training at the Police Academy in New York I was excited. I was assigned to a local Precinct in Queens. The Commanding Officer took one look at me and said that the mop, brooms and dustpan were at the back and I should start cleaning. He thought I was the janitor. I explained that I was a cop and I needed a locker to store my things. You should see the look on his face. He threw up his arms in the air and said that he had seen everything!’
The year was 1985 and Briznand Somraj was one of the first Guyanese police officers in the New York Police Department (NYPD). Life was not easy and there were other instances that made the rookie cop think whether he had chosen the right profession. Continue reading →
