Thanks for the article on on Roxanne. She is related to a cousin who kept me informed of her. I am sure she is the first female of Guyanese parentage to be elected to the New York State Senate but not sure about the “first to win public office in New York” ……..unless you are referring to New York State Government.

There are at least two females of Guyanese parents elected to offices in New York. (There may be others) One was elected as Controller (maybe now Mayor) of Mt. Vernon in Westchester. Another is now a NY State Supreme Court Judge. Her roots are the Stewarts from the Skeldon area. I know both personally and a bit embarrassed at not recalling their names (senility).
Of course you know former State Senator Sampson, whose father is Guyanese.

I am happy that Dr Dhanpaul Narine continues to write about these Guyanese who work so hard in the USA and achieve successes. While walking by the Middle Street, Georgetown, former home of Senator Roxanne Persaud, I stopped briefly and engaged an elder member of her family in conversation, and I can tell you, he is so proud of his Roxanne. Just for the record, the Guyanese-born father of former NY Senator Johm Sampson, actually worked on the construction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers which were destroyed on 9/11. .

Sometimes people forget their roots when their branches are reaching for the clouds; not so Senator Roxanne Persaud. She is as conscious of her roots as any Guyanese could be; and I speak from personal experience. Thanks for this article Dr. Dhanpaul Narine. Much appreciated.
