BEING GRATEFUL AND HAPPY

I AM THANKFUL: FOR THE WIFE WHO SAYS IT’S HOT DOGS TONIGHT….. BECAUSE SHE IS HOME WITH ME, AND NOT OUT WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

FOR THE HUSBAND WHO IS ON THE SOFA BEING A COUCH POTATO,
BECAUSE HE IS HOME WITH ME AND NOT OUT AT THE BARS.

FOR THE TEENAGER WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES

BECAUSE IT MEANS SHE IS AT HOME, NOT ON THE STREETS.

FOR THE TAXES I PAY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED .

FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.

FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG

BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.

FOR MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM OUT IN THE SUNSHINE

FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING, WINDOWS THAT NEED CLEANING, AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING ….   BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE A HOME.

FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT
BECAUSE IT MEANS WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

FOR THE PARKING SPOT I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING AND I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION.

FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM WARM.

FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH WHO SINGS OFF KEY

BECAUSE IT MEANS I CAN HEAR.

FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR.

FOR WEARINESS AND ACHING MUSCLES AT THE END OF THE DAY

BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN CAPABLE OF WORKING HARD.

FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS

BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM ALIVE.

AND FINALLY, FOR TOO MANY E-MAILS …….
BECAUSE
IT MEANS I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME.

Live well, Laugh

The ones I take issues with:

FOR THE TAXES I PAY BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED.

So working for slave wages and under oppressed conditions are justifiable? This falls in line with those who say “I’m just happy to have a job.” Good grief, bring back slavery then! At least the slaves, unlike the indentured servants, were fed and cared for, clothed and given a place to live AND they did not have to pay taxes or repay their passages. Yet, they weren’t grateful and for good reasons. Here, have blue pill…

FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS.

Friends? More likely freeloaders and hangers-on. Possibly some party crashers, too. I see these “friends” don’t stick around and offer to clean up. REAL friends you got there, stranger.

AND FINALLY, FOR TOO MANY E-MAILS …….
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME.

Junk mail, spammers and unsolicited emails are now considered emails from friends? Well, I guess I am one ungrateful friend because I go to great lengths to block these emails and other suspicious emails from people who bombard and clog up my inbox with attention seeking junk.

Are you sure these folks are “friends”? You need to break yourself from the habit of mistaking courtesy for love, stranger.

FOR THE TAXES I PAY BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED.
I was born a British Guianese; and I do have a birth certificate that attests to that event.
The cultural message went something like this, “When you do not have a job, any job will do. When you do have a job, look for a better one.”
In the words of my grandmother, “keep wat yuh gat. Wait fuh wha’ yuh want”.
“I’m just happy to have a job.” and grateful to say it. Because the ‘Dole’, ‘unemployment insurance’ and the like, are anathema to my upbringing.
We did have one glorious party on or around Easter, nineteen fifty something. I did promise to return next morning to clean up (97 palm fronds! Can you imagine?). Only to find out that Enid, Elaine and Evadne could not bear to go to bed with the house in that condition! I turned up, prepared for a massive clean up, I found the place thoroughly cleaned up; and spent the next few hours listening to the music of the day.
I owe that Rampersaud family a debt of gratitude for having shown me an idealism that was “beyond my ken” due to my slum upbringing.
I am far different from the generation of my grandchildren; but if “Facebook” and similar sites help me to keep in touch with my nieces and nephews and their children, then I will freely give them my email address to use as they will. For my part, I will do what it takes to keep that line of communication open and unconditional.
