By Dr. Dhanpaul Narine

I n the course of our everyday lives we encounter many people. There are those that stand out because of their station and import. But there are others who carry on in all manner of adversities and challenges and make waves that touch the lives of others in positive ways. Our profile is about a young lady that has reached the top of her profession in simple yet dramatic ways and has passed on her experience to others so that they too can make a difference.

Hema Prashad was born in Skeldon in Berbice, Guyana. Her mom Emily Maharaj is from No. 63 Village while her dad Goberdhan Maharaj is from No. 64 Village in the Corentyne. Hema started school at a young age in Guyana and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In September 1982 she left Guyana for New York and she was excited but a little apprehensive as she didn’t know what the future would bring. The family settled initially in Richmond Hill in New York and Hema went to school there.

This was a short-lived experience as a few months later the family left for the Bronx. Hema attended Joseph Wade MS117 and in a diverse environment she stood out. She wanted to be the leader and to pursue her dreams. She did well and excelled in English and Music, especially in Philharmonic music. Her friends Lydia Rodriguez and Krishna Toolsie were on hand to help out and Hema is grateful to them. There was Ron Rubio who taught computer science and Karen Grayson and Ms. Koenisgberg who were always encouraging Hema to do well.
