Behind her welcoming smile and friendliness lie a steely determination to reach the top. It took her a while but her hard work paid off and this summer Faye Burrowes was awarded her doctorate degree in education. It was a proud moment for this educator from Guyana who has now made her home in New York. Dr. Faye Burrowes has made us all proud. Her story is uplifting and inspirational.

Faye was born in Riverstown Village in the Essequibo Coast of Guyana. Her mom was Mary Burrowes and her dad was George Burrowes. Faye is the tenth of eleven children and the last girl in the family. She attended Riverstown Primary School and then Normal Educational Institute which was a private High School in Queenstown on the Essequibo Coast. Faye loved Math and English and her teachers Arnold Drakes and Miss Innis were very supportive.

Faye passed her O’Levels and she said that there was no motivation to move ahead as her relatives were supporting her. She had moved to Georgetown. But this changed when she met a friend Eileen Garroway. One day as she was leaving the cinema Faye bumped into Eileen. After the formalities Eileen wanted to know what Faye was doing. Eileen felt that Faye would make a good teacher and encouraged her to apply to the Ministry of Education.

Wow WOW what a struggle life has been for Faye Burrowed as an educator par excellence. Question did she not have children ? If not guess she has many in her life……her students. An exceptional individual who is an inspiration to those who wish to emulate her in a career in education.
Would love to read more of Guyanese in the diaspora who have also had to leave Guyana to live their dream. Sad that they never returned during or after fulfilling their dreams. FAYE BURROWES is a great loss to next generations of Guyanese.
Hope she returns to her roots sometime in the future if only temporary.
Her story and many like hers can inspire next generations of Guyanese.
Nothing is impossible …dreams are for free and one can make them come true ….reality !🎓

With the technology available today there are no excuses.

Congratulations Faye Burrowes wherever you choose live out your life….hopefully not far from your Guyanese roots. Bless you.

    Respectfully
    Kamtan
PS thanks to comrade Dr Narine for highlighting this devoted woman’s achievements in education.

There are so many Guyanese, both at home and abroad, who are making terrific contributions to their country and to the wider world, who are almost invisible to the media – and so I applaud Dr. Dhanpaul Narine for throwing the spotlight on this TEACHER. Bravo Teacher Faye. God Bless you.
