 Guyanese New York Diaspora Announces Plans to Commemorate Guyana’s

50th Independence Anniversary in June 2016

NEW YORK CITY: October 5, 2015  – Guyana’s Consulate General in New York City and the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebration Committee in New York have announced elaborate plans to celebrate Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary in New York City from June 4th to 12th, 2016.

The Committee’s Communications Director, Nevlon Duguid, disclosed Monday that the bipartisan, broad-based Committee comprises one hundred and twelve members from the New York City metropolitan area, Atlanta, North Carolina and Florida. He said the Committee is divided into twelve sub-committees for efficacy.

Officers of the Committee are: Mr. Rickford Burke – Chairman; Ms. Lourdeth Ferguson Secretary; Ms. Geraldine Joseph-Watson – Assistant Secretary; Mr. Aquafie Munroe – Treasurer; Mr. Ewart Marshall – Assistant Treasurer; Mr. Rennie Parris – Recording Secretary and Ms. Jacqueline Smartt – Assistant Recording Secretary. General Counsel and Counsel to the Committee are Attorneys Rovin Rozario and Edward Meertins-George, respectively.

Guyana’s President, His Excellency Brigadier David Granger, and other officials of the government of Guyana have been invited to attend the New York festivities. Duguid said a State Dinner and Awards Ceremony and a grand finale Mashramani-styled, Guyanese-American Unity Parade and Rally will culminate the week-long celebration. He estimated an attendance of over twenty-five thousand nationals at the Unity Parade.

Duguid said that the commemoration will be officially launched in November 2015 with the kick off  “an amazing and a robust eight-month public relations and social media campaign to keep the Diaspora informed and to solicit unprecedented participation.” He promised a spectacular celebration of every aspect of Guyana’s rich history and culture of which every Guyanese will be ecstatic and proud.

The celebration will include the following commemorative events which will be coordinated by the corresponding sub-committee Chairs:

► Interfaith Prayer Service on June 4th, in Queens: Chair – Dr. Candace Cummings, Co-Chair – Mr. Kishore Seunarine

► Symposium on the History & Development of Guyana on June 5th, in Queens: Co-Chair – Dr. Ivelaw Griffith, Dr. Vibert Cambridge and Dr. Kimani Nehusi.

 “Guyana Gives Back” – A Day of Volunteerism throughout New York City on June 6th: Chair – Dr. Steven Carrly. Co-Chairs are Dr. Rohan Soma, Attorney Cheddi Jagan, II, Dr. Janice Emmanuel, Dr. Jacqueline Gulstone and Attorney Rovin Rozario.

”Invest Guyana” Business and Investment Conference on June 7th, in Manhattan: Chair – Mr. Ewart Marshall, Co-Chairs are Ms. Felicia Persaud, Ms. Anita Jaikaran and Dr. Shamir Ally.

► Cocktail Reception at the United Nations to Commemorate 50 Years of Membership on June 8th in Manhattan, Co-Chairs – Ambassador George Talbot and Ms. Lourdeth Ferguson.

Guyana Flag Raising Ceremony on June 9th in East Orange, New Jersey – Co-Chairs – Ms. Sandra Harte and Ms. Ira Lewis.

Unity Concert and Cultural Extravaganza on June 10th in Brooklyn, Chair – Ms. Rose October-Edun.

President’s Cup Soccer Tournament & Youth Fun Day on June 11th in Brooklyn, Co-Chairs – Mr. Omotolo Goulding and Mr. Jason Waldron.

State Dinner & Awards Ceremony on June 11th (evening) in New York City, Co-Chairs – Ms. Lourdeth Ferguson and Mr. Rickford Burke

Guyanese-American Unity Parade (Mashramani) & Rally on June 12th in Brooklyn, Chair – Mr. Rickford Burke, Co-Chairs are Mr. Jack Barat, Mr. Sean London, Mr. Jason Waldron, Attorney Cheddie Jagan, II, Mr. Mohamed Safie and Ms. Brenda Hooper-Marshall.

► Protocol, Invitations and Commemorative Journal committee Co-Chairs are Ms. Claire Patterson and Mr. Standhope Williams.

► Media, Public Relations and Memorabilia committee is chaired by Mr. Nevlon Duguid

► Fund Raising committee is Co-Chaired by Consul General Brentnold Evans and Ms. Ann Narine.

Duguid also revealed that the committee will be selling commemorative memorabilia and souvenirs, but emphasized that the Committee will be the sole merchandiser of such collectable items.

Duguid highlighted the special importance of young people in the celebration. “Our youth are playing a significant role in planning the celebration. They have a role in propelling Guyana to new heights of development. This is why most of the officers as well as most chairs and co-chairs of the events are young people.  “It is laudable that they have stepped forward to help lead this massive effort,” he stressed.

Noting that Diaspora will be keep fully apprised, involved and engaged in the commemorative  activities and events, Duguid said that the committee will continually reach out to every Guyanese organization, religious congregation, societies and every Guyanese community in the US.
